A 200,000 francs pricetag. The real cost: Decades-long friendships. This is the world of Yasmina Reza’s Art. The story revolves around three friends who find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when one of them buys an expensive piece of abstract art. The play asks the question “What is art?” but this dramatic comedy is as much about friendship as it is about art. Art is so powerful because there is something with which everyone in the audience can relate. The winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and winner of the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Newsweek called it "…a nonstop cross-fire of crackling language, serious issues of life and art expressed in outbursts that sound like Don Rickles with a degree from the Sorbonne…”
Runs Friday, May 17th through Sunday, June 9th with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm.
Special discounted performance on Wednesday, June 5th at 7:30pm.
Talk Back with cast and crew after the performance on Sunday, May 19th.
Sign Language Interpreted performance on Friday, June 7th at 7:30pm.
Audio Description performance on Friday, May 31st at 7:30pm.
On The Town

A classic American musical comedy, On the Town is one of Broadway’s most energetic and inventive musicals. Three sailors come to New York City on a whirlwind, one day leave, to seek adventures, embrace life and find a girl! Along the way they knock down a reconstructed dinosaur, visit Coney Island and have fun at some lively night clubs. Set against the backdrop of WWII and the sailors’ own uncertain futures, On the Town is an exuberant and poignant comedy. On the Town was Leonard Bernstein's first Broadway score. Experience this show the way it was meant to be: with full orchestration from BCT’s live orchestra, large, energetic dance sequences and amusingly innovative sets. Directed by Wendy Lehr.
From Space to Place

Defined by human activities, places are ever-changing, ever-decaying, and always being reborn, often through collective action and collaboration. From Space to Place features projects from local, national and international artists and designers that reexamine place and one's relationship to it. The projects are a result of collaborative and individual efforts to interpret and investigate the phenomena of place and placemaking—the transformation of a space into that which has a distinct identity.Featuring CookKIT from 7pm-10pm outside RegisParallel Hypothetical from 7pm-10pm at Rapson HallIdentity of the Moment, a live performance by Anna Carlson & Joey Crane at 8pm at the Katherine E. Three different artist groups will use CookKIT to explore how cooking can be a performance, tell a story, and act as a memory-building vehicle.Parallel Hypothetical with MAW, Angela Olson and Aaron Westre May 30, 7:00 - 10:00 pmRapson Hall, Courtyard, 89 Church Street SE, MplsJoin us for a mirror exhibition of From Space to Place, but in the virtual realm. This digitally duplicated exhibition raises questions about the value of art and the gallery/museum experience. Come explore how experiencing art through simulation can change the nature of how we see.Structures of Support Workshop with Think Tank June 1, 12:00 - 2:00 pmRegis Center for ArtDevelop a clearer understanding of how our support structures are created and maintained and how we might then work to build more resilient and robust support structures in the future. "Desire lines" are the informal paths created by foot traffic across public spaces not initially intended for foot traffic. Any time you see a dirt path across a patch of grass or up a hill between two sidewalks, or footprints in the snow leading from one place to another, that's a desire line. Looking at traditional desire lines, as well as expanding the idea beyond footpaths, we'll see how people create their own spaces, make shortcuts, defy authority, and carve out new path systems. To sign up for this event, please visit: http://bit.ly/spacetoplacecommonroom.Perspectives on PlacemakingJune 6, 7:00 - 9:00pmRapson Hall, Rm 100, 89 Church Street SE, MplsThis public panel will discuss their individual research and work in relation to place, stemming from radical architecture to neighborhood yards, public housing to socially engaged art. Panelists include: Ursula Lang, Ph.D. candidate in Geography at the University of Minnesota, Ross Elfline, Assistant Professor of Art History at Carleton College and Neeraj Mehta, director of community-based research at Center for Urban and Regional Affairs. Susannah Bielak, artist, writer, cultural and content producer, will moderate the panel.Reverse Scavenger Hunt with Erin Garnaas-HolmesJune 12, 6:00pmLeaves from Regis Center for ArtThe goal of the Reverse Scavenger Hunt is to reverse-collect things from the world around you. Instead of acquiring or consuming objects and experiences and bringing them back to home base, you create, cause, disperse and share them with your environment. You will journey with a team via bicycle into the city and combine items and interactions with places/people from a given list, while infusing life into your surroundings! A bicycle and camera are recommended for this event.
This modern play is dedicated to the students in all of us – the ones who are afraid to make friends, the ones who ace every test, the ones who hate the 6th grade and the ones who would give anything to be in the 3rd grade again. Through short poems, monologues and scene vignettes, young performers (grades 3 and up) explore the excitement, challenge, heartbreak, and surprises in every corner of the classroom. Created and directed by Anthony Neuman.
The Student asks how innovative art making can be linked intrinsically to community building. The project’s overall goal is to serve the geographic community in which it is residing and generate a creative process that includes a community building component among its participants and audience as a method of healing in its questioning of societal problems and individual concerns. The Student is about learning, about learners, about the process of learning. The work takes the position that in the process of learning, the student is always learning but not always knowing. This is the heart of The Student, awareness of the self. The student can learn, but does not always listen to itself and it is not always the self, but other than the self. The Student is a story of becoming lost and found again. It is a story of knowing one is going to find one’s self again, if and when there is effort to create a pathway towards understanding. The Student acts on all these different parts of learning.Who can participate?: The Student is open to anyone to participate as long as they consider themselves a student and are willing to say “yes” to a movement-based creative process. Performers will consist of community members, vocalists, student dancers, and a core group of dancers/actors. Recruitment efforts will primarily focus on the student/staff/faculty population at St. Catherine’s University and community members related or unrelated to any organizational community partners.About Vanessa Voskuil: vanessavoskuil.org Funding: The Student is generously supported by the Jerome Foundation and is underwritten by the American Composers Forum’s Live Music for Dance Minnesota program in partnership with NewMusicUSA, with funds provided by the McKnight Foundation and the Andrew W.
