From Space to Place

Defined by human activities, places are ever-changing, ever-decaying, and always being reborn, often through collective action and collaboration. From Space to Place features projects from local, national and international artists and designers that reexamine place and one's relationship to it. The projects are a result of collaborative and individual efforts to interpret and investigate the phenomena of place and placemaking—the transformation of a space into that which has a distinct identity. Structures of Support Workshop with Think Tank June 1, 12:00 - 2:00 pm Regis Center for Art Develop a clearer understanding of how our support structures are created and maintained and how we might then work to build more resilient and robust support structures in the future. "Desire lines" are the informal paths created by foot traffic across public spaces not initially intended for foot traffic. Any time you see a dirt path across a patch of grass or up a hill between two sidewalks, or footprints in the snow leading from one place to another, that's a desire line. Looking at traditional desire lines, as well as expanding the idea beyond footpaths, we'll see how people create their own spaces, make shortcuts, defy authority, and carve out new path systems. Panelists include: Ursula Lang, Ph.D. candidate in Geography at the University of Minnesota, Ross Elfline, Assistant Professor of Art History at Carleton College and Neeraj Mehta, director of community-based research at Center for Urban and Regional Affairs. Susannah Bielak, artist, writer, cultural and content producer, will moderate the panel. Reverse Scavenger Hunt with Erin Garnaas-Holmes June 12, 6:00pm Leaves from Regis Center for Art The goal of the Reverse Scavenger Hunt is to reverse-collect things from the world around you. Instead of acquiring or consuming objects and experiences and bringing them back to home base, you create, cause, disperse and share them with your environment. You will journey with a team via bicycle into the city and combine items and interactions with places/people from a given list, while infusing life into your surroundings! A bicycle and camera are recommended for this event.

Casket Arts First Thursday Open Studios

First Thursdays is the Open Studio and Gallery Tour held the first Thursday of each month in the NE Minneapolis Arts District. Many of our professional NEMAA member artists open their studios and greet visitors. With a more relaxed atmosphere, this mini-AAW is a great experience for the art collector and browser. Architecture Tour of the State Capitol

Take a 90-minute guided tour of one of the grandest and most architecturally appealing public buildings in the United States. Along the way, learn about the Capitol's renowned architect, Cass Gilbert, and building features of this Beaux-Arts styled masterpiece. The tour will include stops in the legislative chambers, rotunda, and a special rooftop visit to see stunning views of the city and a close-up look at the Quadriga ("golden horses") weather permitting. Visitors can also see a cut-away drawing of the unique dome system and photographs documenting the 1898-1905 construction of the building. Books on the life and career of Cass Gilbert will be available for purchase at the Information Desk.

'Winds and Currents' DECC / Amsoil Ice Arena Public Art

'WINDS and CURRENTS' is a public art project terrazzo floor design permanently installed in the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center / Amsoil Ice Arena. This work transforms a simple traffic area (approximately 3,400 square feet) into its own space which can now be used for receptions, public meetings and fundraisers. The artwork reflects forces that shape our earth and lives. When you visit the space, you can feel the energy and movement. The organic lines, representations of nature, and indigenous mineral samples have surprises waiting for you to discover.
