Bring your creativity and an aptitude to try new things. We will cover soldering, fabricating and hand forming metal into your own design. This class offers students creative rein with their projects, including rings, necklaces, earrings or simple metal objects. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn the basics or grow as a fledgling jeweler. Dolly Fiterman Collection: Insights Into Modern Art

Dolly Fiterman has graciously given some of her modern art collection to the University of St. Thomas. An exhibit of works from this collection are on display from January 17-May 26, 2013 in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center lobby gallery. The gift of modern art is being used as a teaching tool for graduate students in the MA Art History program. The selection of works in the exhibit, accompanying didactic labels and catalog submissions have been chosen and created by Dr. Craig Eliason's students in his Craft of Researching Modern Art graduate course. A Graduate Student Panel Discussion will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27th in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium. A reception will follow in the lobby gallery. Free and open to the public. O'Shaughnessy Educational Center is handicap accessible.

Life At the Pace of Pigment

[i][b]Life at the Pace of Pigment[/b][/i], featuring oil painters Derek Davis and Tom McGregor. The show runs from May 25th through July 6th. Expect to see mostly plein air pieces many of which are fresh off the easel and painted at area locations. Derek has been busy this spring painting at Crosby Lake and Hidden Falls and Tom has spent a lot of time along the banks of the Mississippi river. The show opens with a reception on Saturday May 25^th from 7 to 9 pm.

Defined by human activities, places are ever-changing, ever-decaying, and always being reborn, often through collective action and collaboration. From Space to Place features projects from local, national and international artists and designers that reexamine place and one's relationship to it. "Desire lines" are the informal paths created by foot traffic across public spaces not initially intended for foot traffic. Any time you see a dirt path across a patch of grass or up a hill between two sidewalks, or footprints in the snow leading from one place to another, that's a desire line. Session 2013-2015 In 1985, the City of Paris gave Pontus Hulten the task of creating a graduate school for research in contemporary art. Its antecendents were to be the Weimer Bauhaus School and Black Mountain College in the U.S., and it was meant to function as an alternative to Paris's École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 2012, the Biennale de Paris, with its history, experiences and specificities, decided to open a new Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (IHEAP), according to its own operating mode which may consist in reactivating abandoned institutions. The Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (IHEAP) offers participants a course of study where they can free themselves from the inherited art history of the 20th century, by investigating crucial issues of art in the 21st century, an ongoing history in which the participants will eventually take part. IHEAP is open to all those who have an interest in singular and extreme practices which currently and sporadically appear in the art world and elsewhere. IHEAP is for those who want to change their artistic practice or professional activity, for those who after several years of art school want to break free of alienated learning, who expect more from a school than a framework for artistic production, for those who reject art as it is commonly practiced, and finally for those who wish to work on essential issues in intimate and experimental conditions. The course of study is completed in two years. The first year is composed of sessions work that mix practice and theorie. The second year is dedicated to the creation of an activity report. Its purpose is to demonstrate the development of the participant's research. The development of this document will be carefully followed by IHEAP's staff. IHEAP does not discriminate by age. No specific diploma is required to apply. Study at Iheap is equivalent to a post-graduate degree. The application fee is 75 euros. Tuition is 2800 euros for two years studies. The two steps of the entrance examination at IHEAP: 1. Pre-admission Candidates must send complete form application online to IHEAP before May 30, 2013 and provide a text limited to 10 000 characters, explaining why they want to study at IHEAP. In place of the text they can attach a recording of 10 minutes maximum (MP3, 8Mo maximum). Candidates’ applications will be examined by a jury. After the candidates’s application have been examined by a jury, applicants will be advised of results by e-mail. 2. Admission Pre-admitted candidates will be individually interviewed by the selection panel, on either June 20 and 28, 2013. Pre-admitted candidates will be invited to take the entrance exam, which consists in an interview with a selection panel. The candidate must present his or her work process to a jury that will interview him or her regarding work, interests and reasons for attending the Institut des hautes études en arts plastiques (IHEAP). Admissions are made based on quality of motivation and limitation of available places. Incomplete application folders will not be considered.
