The story revolves around three friends who find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when one of them buys an expensive piece of abstract art. The play asks the question “What is art?” but this dramatic comedy is as much about friendship as it is about art. [i]Art[/i] is so powerful because there is something with which everyone in the audience can relate. The winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and winner of the 1996 Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Newsweek called it "…a nonstop cross-fire of crackling language, serious issues of life and art expressed in outbursts that sound like Don Rickles with a degree from the Sorbonne…”

[b]Hatcher & Dickens![/b] Gerald Charles Dickens plays the role of his great-great-grandfather, Charles Dickens, in this staged reading of a new play-in-progress by Jeffrey Hatcher. Why would the beloved author of [i]A Christmas Carol, Tale of Two[/i] [i]Cities, [/i]and many other classic books, write a simple retelling of the life of Christ for his children's eyes only, requesting that it not be published? Hatcher explores with humor and insight the emotions and forces in Dickens' life that may have motivated him, including his testy relationship with the pre-adolescent poet-to-be, Algernon Charles Swinburne. An audience talk-back will follow each performance.

This is the first of many annual reports on the creative economy and a broad baseline of reliable information on creative jobs, arts spending and creative for-profit and nonprofit organizations. This report will inspire broad community conversations on ways to utilize this data – and encourage arts leaders to consider how they measure and communicate their own impacts to a broader audience. 2012-13 Minneapolis Musical Theatre Season: Sunset Boulevard

[i]Sunset Boulevard[/i] opens with Norma Desmond, the fading silent movie star abandoned by the “talkies,” who longs for a return to big screen glory. Enter struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis, and their ensuing passionate and warped affair leads to a volatile conclusion. The 1950 film, directed by Billy Wilder and starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three, including one for Best Music. In 1997, it ranked as #12 on the American Film Institute’s Best American Films of the 20th Century. The original Broadway production, directed by Trevor Nunn with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, won seven 1995 Tony Awards including Best Musical. As Time Magazine described it, “The show’s a hit. Lloyd Webber’s most shamefully and artfully constructed score.
