From Space to Place

Defined by human activities, places are ever-changing, ever-decaying, and always being reborn, often through collective action and collaboration. From Space to Place features projects from local, national and international artists and designers that reexamine place and one's relationship to it. The projects are a result of collaborative and individual efforts to interpret and investigate the phenomena of place and placemaking—the transformation of a space into that which has a distinct identity.Featuring CookKIT from 7pm-10pm outside RegisParallel Hypothetical from 7pm-10pm at Rapson HallIdentity of the Moment, a live performance by Anna Carlson & Joey Crane at 8pm at the Katherine E. Nash GalleryArtists and Designers in the Exhibition:Susan Armington, Nicholaus Arnold, Bad News from Houston, Andrew Bergmann, Patrick Beseda, Susannah Bielak, Anna Carlson, Juan William Chávez, Tuia Cherici, Joey Crane, Federico Garcia Lammers, Murat Germen, Brita Hauser, Erin Garnaas-Holmes, Katie Hargrave, Lauren Herzak-Bauman, John Kallen, Rebecca Kallen, Caroline Kent, Sam Krahn, Kendra Larson, James Lynch, Minneapolis Art on Wheels, Sara Nichol, TJ Proechel, Angela Olson, Tyler Rush, Andrew Salveson, Nick Satinover, Emily Stover, Andy Sturdevant, The Think Tank that has yet to be named, Sergio Vucci, Aaron Westre and Ryan Wurst.Related EventsCookKIT May 30, 7:00 - 10:00 pmRegis Center for Art Join us for a series of short outdoor events involving CookKIT—a mobile kitchen designed by Emily Stover, that serves as a platform for food-based community programming. Three different artist groups will use CookKIT to explore how cooking can be a performance, tell a story, and act as a memory-building vehicle.Parallel Hypothetical with MAW, Angela Olson and Aaron Westre May 30, 7:00 - 10:00 pmRapson Hall, Courtyard, 89 Church Street SE, MplsJoin us for a mirror exhibition of From Space to Place, but in the virtual realm. This digitally duplicated exhibition raises questions about the value of art and the gallery/museum experience. Come explore how experiencing art through simulation can change the nature of how we see.Structures of Support Workshop with Think Tank June 1, 12:00 - 2:00 pmRegis Center for ArtDevelop a clearer understanding of how our support structures are created and maintained and how we might then work to build more resilient and robust support structures in the future. Join Think Tank as we explore support through visualizations, conversations and activities. Take the Structures of Support survey here: http://www.wearethethinktank.org/structures-of-support-survey/Desire Lines Tour with Common Room June 5, 6:00 - 8:30pm Leaves from Regis Center for ArtAndy Sturdevant and Sergio Vucci will lead a Common Room tour around Minneapolis, looking at desire lines around the city from the back of a vintage chartered bus. "Desire lines" are the informal paths created by foot traffic across public spaces not initially intended for foot traffic. Any time you see a dirt path across a patch of grass or up a hill between two sidewalks, or footprints in the snow leading from one place to another, that's a desire line. Looking at traditional desire lines, as well as expanding the idea beyond footpaths, we'll see how people create their own spaces, make shortcuts, defy authority, and carve out new path systems. To sign up for this event, please visit: http://bit.ly/spacetoplacecommonroom.Perspectives on PlacemakingJune 6, 7:00 - 9:00pmRapson Hall, Rm 100, 89 Church Street SE, MplsThis public panel will discuss their individual research and work in relation to place, stemming from radical architecture to neighborhood yards, public housing to socially engaged art. Panelists include: Ursula Lang, Ph.D. candidate in Geography at the University of Minnesota, Ross Elfline, Assistant Professor of Art History at Carleton College and Neeraj Mehta, director of community-based research at Center for Urban and Regional Affairs. Susannah Bielak, artist, writer, cultural and content producer, will moderate the panel.Reverse Scavenger Hunt with Erin Garnaas-HolmesJune 12, 6:00pmLeaves from Regis Center for ArtThe goal of the Reverse Scavenger Hunt is to reverse-collect things from the world around you. Instead of acquiring or consuming objects and experiences and bringing them back to home base, you create, cause, disperse and share them with your environment. You will journey with a team via bicycle into the city and combine items and interactions with places/people from a given list, while infusing life into your surroundings! A bicycle and camera are recommended for this event.
