2012-13 Minneapolis Musical Theatre Season: Sunset Boulevard

[i]Sunset Boulevard[/i] opens with Norma Desmond, the fading silent movie star abandoned by the “talkies,” who longs for a return to big screen glory. Enter struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis, and their ensuing passionate and warped affair leads to a volatile conclusion. The 1950 film, directed by Billy Wilder and starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three, including one for Best Music. In 1997, it ranked as #12 on the American Film Institute’s Best American Films of the 20th Century. The original Broadway production, directed by Trevor Nunn with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, won seven 1995 Tony Awards including Best Musical. As Time Magazine described it, “The show’s a hit. Lloyd Webber’s most shamefully and artfully constructed score. Chris Mann, the classically based pop vocalist and 2012 finalist on NBC’s “The Voice,” is touring in support of his first album, “Roads,” (October 2012), which shot to #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. His PBS special, “A Mann for All Seasons,” will air locally on Twin Cities Public Television in March. Featuring Martina McBride and jazz saxophonist Mindi Abair, it is a re-creation of the Elvis Presley ’69 Comeback Special with Mann performing in a boxing ring on a Sony soundstage.

Jazz88 presents: A Weaving of Traditions

Jazz has long been recognized as America’s original musical art form. However, predating jazz, there was another form of music rooted in this land—that of the Native Americans. Jazz88 presents a new project that explores the roots of American Music, intertwining both music styles. [b][i]A Weaving of Traditions,[/i][/b] an evening of Native American music and interpretation, is created by Minnesota musician and Native American flutist Bobb Fantauzzo and his group JazZen. Accompanying the group will be Lyz Jaakola, who provides traditional Anishinaabe vocals and percussion. It is an eclectic mix of the traditional and the untraditional, the conventional and the unconventional, the past and the present. The Tenors, the internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum recording artists, will be touring in support of their second studio album, “Lead With Your Heart,” (Verve) released in January 2013 and which debuted at #1 on Amazon.com. Formerly known as The Canadian Tenors, they include Clifton Murray, Victor Micallef, Remigio Pereira and Fraser Walters. Combining the best of folk music and rock and roll, with a touch of country thrown in, they gave us such hits as "Do You Believe in Magic," "Daydream," "You Didn't Have to be So Nice," "Nashville Cats" and the anthem for a hot July evening, "Summer in the City." In 2006, the band was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. "...While Foster is not a self- consciously retro artist, she is definitely a singer from the old school, whose huge, full-bodied voice has drawn frequent comparisons with such legends as [Aretha] Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald." Doug McPherson, Keyboard Player Magazine Davina Sowers hit the Midwest scene in February 2005 and she hasn't looked back since. It didn't take her long after moving to Minnesota from Key West, FL to start making a name for herself. With great vocals and piano, she commands attention on stage and leaves everyone smiling. Davina has been performing since the age of 5, with the support of an extremely musical family. Sowers, a classically-trained pianist, has years of experience in piano performance. She and her band made a big splash at Duluth's Bayfront Blues Festival in 2006 to2008, having the highest sales in CDs all three years. Alice Cooper, the chart-topping original King of Shock Rock known for his wildly theatrical shows mixed with fake blood, electric chairs, boa constrictors and pyrotechnics, brings his “Raise the Dead Tour” to Minneapolis. With a career spanning more than five decades, the eclectic artist with a penchant for ghoulish stage shows and gender-bending wardrobes has influenced such other powerhouse musical acts as KISS, Marilyn Manson and Ozzy Osbourne. Cooper was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 and the original five member group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. There will be no opening act.
