Hairspray, the Musical

Young Artists Initiative (YAI) is back with the second play of their 10^th Anniversary Season presenting HAIRSPRAY, the Musical. The play takes place in the early 1960’s in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad, a large girl with big hair and a kind heart, has only one passion — to dance! She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show” and is quickly transformed into a teen celebrity. She then successfully sets out to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of the super handsome Link Larkin, and racially integrate the television show. Baltimore will never be the same! Ticket prices are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors/students (18 and under). Tickets can be purchased online or at the performance. Seating is general admission.

Summers in Detroit Lakes have long been a time to celebrate spending time in the great outdoors. Detroit Lakes is a also a community that embraces culture and the arts. With the 4th Annual Shakespeare In The Park performances, the Historic Holmes Theatre and volunteer director Nikki Caulfield believe they’ll be a perfect blending of the two. “The bandshell is begging for an outdoor theatre performance… and with DL being such an outdoor community in the summer I thought it would fit nicely,” says Caulfield. Over 15 local actors will present “The Winter’s Tale,” [b]June 28-30 & July 5-7[/b]. [i]Sunset Boulevard[/i] opens with Norma Desmond, the fading silent movie star abandoned by the “talkies,” who longs for a return to big screen glory. Enter struggling Hollywood screenwriter Joe Gillis, and their ensuing passionate and warped affair leads to a volatile conclusion. The 1950 film, directed by Billy Wilder and starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson, was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three, including one for Best Music. In 1997, it ranked as #12 on the American Film Institute’s Best American Films of the 20th Century.
