"that person's advice" as we know was that odd coyote person whose advice included insulting me, and yes, I have gotten caught up in conversation as well. Once I realized what this forum was like I decided to not get caught up in it but keep popping in hoping that the promised moderators would show up and clean the place up. Quite honestly, the painting thread was a lame attempt to start ANY type of conversation that wasn't people arguing and insulting each other.

I need to take issue on a few things said early on in this thread.
Gabriel Combs stated that he felt that certain “gallery folk” were engaged in immoral practices and then went on to complain about Yuri Arajs currating work that had originally appeared in the “Will Work for Food” show at Café Barbette. It was my understanding that this show at Barbette was the “Best of” the “Will Work for Food Show” and since Yuri curates the Barbette show, it was “The Best of” in Yuri’s opinion. Barbette, like many other non-gallery businesses (restaurants, hair salons, cafes) that enjoy supporting local artists by hanging their work have discovered that, simply put, it’s a lot of work. Getting quality art hung in a way that does not disrupt daily business, dealing with the artists, with sales, with press…it often becomes not worth it for the non-gallery business. Yuri, as the curator, proposed an exhibition opportunity to artists in the “Will Work for Food Show” and they were able to take advantage, or as Combs chose, not to. Yuri coordinated the collecting of the art, hung the show, and handled sales. He would have done all this had a sale been made at the show or not. In other words, he took a risk. The artists got more exposure. Where is the immorality? If one of the artists chose to participate because, as Combs said, “they didn’t want to go against Yuri’s wishes”, it was probably because Yuri is a very nice and genuine person who has worked tirelessly to advance the work of literally hundreds of Minnesota artists and not because they felt like they would be black-balled from the local arts scene as it seemed to be implied. And Ray Rolfe, to state that Yuri owes you money in the very next post after Yuri being accused of immoral practices by another implies so much more then just Yuri owes you money. If he owes you money, contact him personally and ask him for it, don’t announce it in a public forum. Last edited by amy rice : 08-27-2007 at 07:09 PM. |

Amy, thats awsome that you replied to this thread. You are one of the few artists whos work I like, and I think that you should be getting the success you have.
However, i've become completely dis-interested in "making it" as an artist, as most people that I meet that call themselves artists get on my nerves. I'm not concerned with what people think of me, my work, or my thoughts and opinions on art. I have no ulterior career motivation to make art, and thus no rep to worry about. Art is in excess and mostly boring. Most of the artists i've met will stab each other in the back for any reason, and then act like they are cool. If people end up thinking i'm a prick, at least I get to say what I feel and try to be straight up about it. My intention is not to offend, but if I offend, so be it. I've no plans of showing work publicly anymore, and no interest in planning to. I don't think all of the artists suck, or all the galleries suck, but there is so much bs that i've lost interest in being involved directly, interacting more than occassionally, or bothering to hang shows. I'd rather sell my work on ebay for pennies before showing any more in mpls, unless its free and completely on my terms. I give away a lot of my art out of love for art, out of passion for it, the same reasons i've believed so strongly in street art. I cannot be weighed down with concerning myself with monetary issues and art politics past a few posts like these. I'll starve to death with integrity intact, and with middle finger still raised towards the bs people that know who they are, and should get pointed out. I know its a lot of work to manage shows, hang them, ect. I had no intention of sounding like a Yuri basher, I just stated what I felt about a particular situation. I believe being honest about these things is more productive than just nodding and going along. Plan on me only getting worse about it, as someone needs to say something, or try to, without just saying f you. |

So I look at the forum every day and no posties at all for a week. Most recently on this thread there has been some individuals running barbs through the few active posters. But allow me to digress...
This Friday (Sept 7) Altered Esthetics is opening a show "The Art of Sacrifice" which looks to be really good. And also at Gallery 122 at Hang It Amy Rice has a show opening which looks intriguing. Both Galleries are located in NE Minneapolis so you can do both. (I will not make either openings due to a prior engagement) For the NaySayers: This is an open forum. All are welcome. (except for those who refuse to sign the TOU). To cut down the most frequent posters is at best spineless at worst malevolent. To build this community we need more people posting, not fewer. Gabe has been posting short list type poetry in the "what are you doing today" thread. These are stimulating and grab your interest. Do we want less of this type of posts? I think we want more. What is interesting is to read the poems, and then check out his artwork. BUT, this thread was originally about why almost no galleries post anything here. While many thoughtful posts have been offered on this subject, the original question remains. I have personally been showing at a number of nonprofit coop type art galleries this year. Other than purenoumena (Altered Esthetics) I have not seen a single post here by those galleries. I post shows here, some I am in, others not, but the actual organizations did and do not post here. I understand why a commercial gallery would not post here. They focus on their client/investor list. Public advertising on an arts forum probably does not generate any sales and they are about the sales. Please don't get me wrong, a commercial gallery which is not about the sales is 1) not your friend and 2) not long in the business. But there are a lot of non-commercial spaces out there that do not list here. That seems to be the more pertinent question? They all seem to know this forum exists yet........ Maybe a snail mail questionaire to all the little coop, charitable, church, etc. asking why this is would give us all some answers. Who knows, I am a monkey boy. Lest you all think well of me here is a little drawing I did last weekend titled Grackle, charcoal and pastel on plywood. ![]() And remember, I am a big boy, I can take it. ![]() |

hey Amy Rice, saw that.
It was just an instant associative reference of discontent. I wasn't intending to "imply so much more". I supposed it was bastardly passive aggressive of me. Ahh, he knows I love him. Besides, O&O stayed in existence long enough to have an intern work on one final project for me. It's amazing and I'm very happy with it. They are reworking one of my pieces to make it far more interesting then it once was. Oh the history! I can't wait to see it. Free posty peace. |
