Black Label Movement returns to Art-A-Whirl 2012 with performances of Carl Flink's A Duet for Wreck, a poignant duet examining the subtle tensions that arise in a relationship struggling for balance. The work will be performed by Flink, a recent McKnight Choreography Fellow, and Black Label Movement Artistic Associate Emilie Plauche Flink, also a recent McKnight Dancer Fellow herself. The Star Tribune wrote of piece: "there are works so great that one wishes they’d never end. Only they do, at precisely the right moment, leaving you elated, shaken, breathless. They’ve been shaped, choreographed, phrased and performed with a rigor that allows for the ache of inevitability — but not before taking every muscle, tangle of emotions and welter of thoughts on a kinesthetic ride. Almost anything by Mark Morris falls into this category. So does . . . Carl Flink’s Duet From Wreck . . . ." The Northern Pump Building, a Naval Ordnance Plant, was built to the north of Thorp Doors, which manufactured armaments during the beginning of World War II. The building was then owned by General Mills during the war. The base of a historic guard tower still remains standing on the property along Central Avenue; representing the history of the security of the building during its confidential manufacturing and uses. It is located just north of the railroad tracks, which used to run straight through the Thorp building during this time to ensure the freight that was loaded on and off remained a secret to outsiders. It was recently decided that the guard tower base should serve as an opportunity for artists to publicly display their work in the NE Minneapolis Arts District, giving them the advantage of showcasing their work on the highly visible Central Avenue. The Historic Thorp & CBC is a proud promoter of the NE Minneapolis Arts District, NEMAA, and the NE Minneapolis Arts Action Plan. Each year, just prior to Art-A-Whirl, the Thorp & CBC will host an unveiling of the new sculpture. This year, there will be a sculpture unveiled by artist Drew Bode: “…The objective was to create a sculpture that reflects a moment in time that makes sense. To try and mimic a glimpse that puts you in awe, like elements in nature all in concert. To put into form the subtle moments of unity in life that draws you beyond the daily rabble to the calming splendor of harmonic embodiment. A direct attempt to show the outside world differently and as a part of us, an encompassing entity that is beautiful when all the workings are in concord…” All Weekend >> BETHEL GALLERIES ART EXHIBIT Presented by the Bethel University Galleries – Suite TBD steken@bethel.edu 10+ Art Students from Bethel University will exhibit and sell their Senior Thesis Artwork.
