Hola Minnesota; are you aware that the sky has fallen.
Yes Ray "Google" has gone to the dark side of commercialism; the big boys control the digital highway. When Ted Kennedy was trying to rally support to fight, the techies were too busy playing on the internet to realize that the "toy" was about to be understood as the "market center" of the world, and of course the rich and powerful know that they need to control it. So they have bought it. Just like the trusts of the the last century.

The model for the abuse of the power was right here on the forums.

The coyote had hopes that "artists de Minnesota" would see what he understood; just as the management of this site sought to keep the forums open only for it's "good souls" because it served it's self interest, so then Google has come to the same conclusion; it's own interest. Money.

In the meanwhile you need to gather with others like yourself who crave freedom and you must now prudently politicize your very existence.

It is sad that everyone here allowed the "TOS" to continue. The TOS is the device by which free use of the medium is controlled.

Had there been a kernel of activism in the Art community there would now be a social structure upon which to build needed economic activism.

Coyote/Jimmy Longoria still can not come onto the forums to start threads to foment discussion on what is going on in the collapse of the Arts organizations in town. He can not point out that it is about the failure of artist to understand the difference between Administration(spend all the money so you can ask for more) and Management( get the money to do more than what you set out to have it do).

Read the head lines about Intermedia and ask where is Scott and all of the "Art writers".

Fear is the only thing we have to fear,... now is the time for all artists to step forward and serve the whole society- the tax-payer made the commitment to fund the Arts- they voted the amendment, we need to find leadership in the Arts that is willing to "Manage what little we will have".

Ray you can not fight Google- but you can build up Minnesota. You have the keenness of mind and the creativity to grow a movement of the lowly average artist=citizen.

Lead RAy, lead.

Default Thanks Jimmy/ Politics in Art / INTER MEDIA ARTS
Can more people be there? I'm in a remotely northern latitude right now.
It's ironic that money is approved by vote, yet the peoples organizations are still threatened.

We are calling on all friends, fans, supporters, members, artists, participants—anyone and everyone who cares about the future of Intermedia Arts. This a call to action. Please make it a priority to be here, in person, for this Community Townhall.

You will hear from
artists, community leaders, Intermedia Arts’ staff and board. You will have a chance to ask questions and offer suggestions. You will find out what you can do to keep Intermedia Arts alive.

Intermedia Arts is in crisis. More importantly, small and mid-sized arts organizations all around us are in crisis. But crisis does not equal failure, and crisis does not mean collapse. It is our response to this crisis that will determine our future. You are our community; we need you to rally with us as we design our future together.

For over 35 years, Intermedia Arts has served as a resource for our community. The work that we do supports hundreds of artists, arts participants and arts organizations each year. Intermedia Arts is a vital part of our culture and our community: we cannot—we must not—allow this work to disappear.

Why many who have enjoyed the "Minnesota Miracle" of "arts friendly money" are coming to a tragic realization that their careers in the Arts were guaranteed by an endless fruiting of funding are lamenting the current conditions-we who have always lived outside, with our bowls extended, now invite you to share our hope that now that you are as poor as the "colored artists" can join us in innovative ways to keep Art going with less money and more "spirit".

So open the door Scott. Allow those who have much to say, but remain afraid to have the words tied to them as it may cost them their job, to come and vent the pain that is endemic to the times.

The fate of Intermedia must be more than a purple calavera- send your writers to follow the story here- as the general economy continues to shrink, Artists of Minnesota need to salvage what little resources that exist- the McKnight funding for this site is guaranteed for two more years. You have a moral responsibility to make this place the "town center"- and it must be open to all us- even those of us who are brown.

Default howling in the pre-spring wind
It is really funny that all of the others have free access to the threads-the coyote is stuck here in this little window and you all come here?

Funny but profoundly sad.

The real stories that need articles are those of "what went wrong".

Yeah- the economy tanked- but the coyote was here hollering that the sky was falling-and what did our "journalist" do?

MERGER

it is the one word that will come with the money that bails out the Arts- start asking the question-start the talking that will create the healing that is most desperately needed- right now; remember Watts? I had the weird class assignment of studying the effects of "ghettos on social unrest just as the Riot unfolded in front of me on my tv- will we as a nation see ourselves as one great ghetto- the Watts towers were protected by the community from the rioters-art is at the core of civilization.

Those of you in "power" need to see the thunder clouds on the horizon-- stand for all of us-
or the "mob" will come to tear down your ivory tower and the coyote will not stand in their way-
make "stone soup" and do not leave the stones lying in reach of the those most betrayed-

a note to you all who fear the coyote-he means you no harm- he is only warning you about the tendency of "history to be repeated-in new and weird ways".

open the door Scott.

It could be said that it is a "kill off". We have a very "aged" group of leaders that have perhaps over stayed their time. What we see is mostly perfecting of the "career" rather than advancing the work. The Art community has not kept pace with the general society; leadership in business is on tight cycles in businesses that are successful while those that die are often mired in staid leadership. You need not look any further than your own seat to see the shift.

2. Is the economy beginning to claim victims amongst the local arts organizations? Is this is a natural cycle of change and renewal?

While it may be natural, it is not a period of "renewal"; its is more of an extinction of those kinds of organizations that do not go through a seasonal renewal. This is a very different "scene". The up and coming "Y" generation is very wary of what has been left to them. The old guard did a great deal of damage to the young artists community with its arrogant view of the times and the future. Very bad parenting skills there in the current status quo.

In effect the "community" is being broken down into non cohesive smattering of small groups of disenchanted groups. Just at the time that we need to gather into Arts Associations that mentor and cooperate, the old guard has divided the young against the old. The is not natural in a human society. It is very self destructive.

3. How do we measure the vitality of an art scene?

Why do we need an Arts Scene? What is wrong with measuring the ART available in the state of Minnesota?
The failure of current "presentation conventions" leads to a very limited visibility of ART. We need to expand the venues and the access. Which requires revamping how we budget support for the Arts; out with the "little Bosses" and in with wider exhibition opportunity. We need to understand what it means in Art when in the retail world, Mr. Dayton is replaced by TARGET management.

4. What is the most important feature of a vibrant arts community?

Fat Happy Artists.

5. How do you view your own role in the local art scene?

I am an Art Form that puts Minnesota on the global Art map.

Lets celebrate the optimism of young artist like "Sophia Leonhardt" who's work merits a real review by the "Lux Lumen" dude!

Don't hold back Lux- she seems to have no regard for all those old guys who go unrewarded for years of great work.

It is tied to an imbalance in their diet... or is it just an imbalance in lifestyle??

There is an idea that this seemingly unhealthy act is undertaken in order to absorb the beneficial bacteria and enzymes from each other in there pack. Observations have recently also been made that human infants exhibit the same inclination and presumedly for the same reason. Odd how "nature" has evolved strange strategies that elude the genius of most guys like you two? Even you linguistic giants in Artistic parlance, might want to expand your enlightenment to include science; increasingly culture is being understood from other intellectual disciplines than the narrow inquiries of Art biography.
