Sculpture by Sam Spiczka
Atwood Memorial Center Gallery, St. Cloud State University October 22 - November 20, 2008 Opening reception Tuesday, October 29, 12-2 p.m. Minnesota artist Sam Spiczka draws inspiration from the varied aspects of nature, though his sculptures are not direct representations but rather creative abstractions of natural forms. Spiczka notes that both “beauty and brutality can be found in unexpected places,” and explores these contrasts in his work. This solo exhibition will include free-standing and wall-mounted sculptures by Spiczka made from Cor-ten steel, a special alloy which weathers to a beautiful, rusted patina. The show will also feature burned wood reliefs by the artist, created by fabricating custom metal "brands," heating them with a torch, and systematically burning them into wood panels. In less than a decade Spiczka has launched a career that has won him local, regional, and national attention. The artist's award-winning sculptures can be found in public and private collections across the United States. “When art is truly new, it unsettles us and may seem ugly because we have little to connect it to. So it is with the work of Sam Spiczka. Drawing upon nature, his personal history, and the place where he lives, he has created a powerful, fresh visual language that is completely his own.” —Victor M.
