An independent curator based in Minneapolis, I have a BA in Art History from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MA in Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas from the Sainsbury Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK.
My work focuses not only on the contemporary artists and material culture (and the sometime interactions of these) from the three regions and their diasporas, but particuarly the ways in which culture acts upon us - the influence of both making and receiving. What are the relational postures created by our cultural algorithms?
I view the museum exhibition as a communicative device and recognize that "museums are not neutral," to quote Curator and Art Historian Latanya Autry. What do we want to say? How do we say it? But before we answer those questions, we have to ask: Who do we want to say it with?
I'm interested in how, to borrow from anthropologist Alex Golub, doing the work "in public" and with others, might yield creative partnerships and expand what's possible.
