Painting for me is a vulnerable experience. It is my outlet of expression when I am at my worst or my best. My recent work comes from an exploration of beautiful sadness, a juxtaposition of solitude and exposure.
I am originally from Ohio and have been in the Twin Cities for about 4 years now. I could not be happier. I have met so many talented local artists and could not be more appreciative of how creative this community is. I acquired my B.F.A in Ohio, concentrating on Painting and Printmaking. I would not have gone through college any other way. Being an art student taught me so much on a whole other level aside from "art".
With this new body of work I focused on uncertainty, which is why my figures are shown without eyes. They are exposed in many other ways, surrounded by the familiar and the unknown at the same time. This is expressed through the vague suggestions of texture and the naturalistic surroundings. Without eyes to look into, one is left to wonder. The emotion is not directed by the eyes; it is directed by the overall composition and surroundings, letting many different meanings unfold to the viewer.
My current work is growth for me. These pieces are my attempt to forget the rest of the art world and just paint what makes me happy! They are influenced by the things that I find beauty in. I read an article once about just painting what makes your heart hurt, and that is exactly what I strive for.
