John Marks
Biography
John Marks is a Minneapolis-based artist, performer, and curator working at the intersections of moving image, music, and visual art who advocates for alternative modalities in all three areas whenever possible.
John’s work has been presented at museums, festivals, alternative spaces, and underground venues in many US cities.
He has served as co-curator of Cellular Cinema, The Soap Factory’s 2013 Minnesota Biennial, The Tuesday Improvised Music Series, and is co-founder of Art of This Gallery, and MirrorLab Studios (Twin Cities).
Artist Statement
I am a Minneapolis-based artist, performer, and curator working at the intersections of moving image, music, and visual art who advocates for alternative modalities in all three areas whenever possible. The liminal spaces at the fringes of these disparate artforms is where I find the greatest potential for producing work that challenges both my own, and my audience’s predispositions about what contemporary art is, what it can be, and where it can be experienced.
Presently, my artistic practice integrates 16mm film projections, audio synthesis, and electroacoustic tape music to compose multimedia performances that I have mounted in institutions, festivals and artist-run venues in the Twin Cities, New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
I apply this multi-disciplinary approach to arts programming through curatorial activities that have taken place locally at The Soap Factory, Art of This Gallery, The White Page Gallery, and countless underground venues throughout the Twin Cities since relocating here in 1997.

For Circadia, I contributed video projections and synthesizer to a new compostion and performance by Crystal Myslajek (composer/performer) with Liz Draper and Chris Hepola (performers) commissioned for the Cedar Cultural Center's 416 Club in 2015. Reflectors is a collaboration between Sam Hoolihan, John Marks, and Crystal Myslajek. The work creates a resonant synthesis of vertically structured film and sound. The images are composed of double and triple exposed Tri X and Ektachrome 16mm film stocks, by layering images on top of one another multiple contexts resolve within single frames.
