I am torn. I desire to disclose personal trauma that, if it were known to those around me, might engender empathy and insight. I simultaneously fear that knowledge of my trauma might be used to injure me yet again. Fear customarily trumps the genuine and essential need to be understood and accepted that would be possible only if I could safely disclose my pain.
I am mindful that confessional work can be unsettling for a viewer or, alternatively, make it nearly impossible for there to be engaged criticism of craft or aesthetics. I hope that the abstraction and concealment of those confessional themes can allow a viewer to engage the work immediately and critically.
