  • Emily Gastineau updated the Artwork 6. Walk This Way
Walk This Way physicalizes the concepts that jazz musicians work with in improvising, comping and exploring what it means to play in a jazz way.
  • In developing All of One Size, I experimented with jazz tap rhythms to reflect the swinging feel of the bluegrass score and explored the idea of gesture and relationships within these songs of death and dying.
  • Emily Gastineau updated the Artwork 4. Blue in 5
The music for Blue in 5 is a 12-bar blues in 5/4 time which gives a unique structureto the work which includes long phrases of improvisation peppered with elements from the dances main vocabulary and a requirement for dancers to have physical conversations before inviting the next soloist in.
  • Emily Gastineau updated the Artwork 3. Trines
Trines is a collaboration between percussionist Peter O’Gorman, Joe Chvala and myself. I choreographed this section, called ‘the slow groove’, to play with syncopation, suspension, accents and canon within a rhythm tap vocabulary and alongside the use of more concert style jazz dance elements.
  • No Habla Espanol explores Afro-Cuban rhythms; cascara, son clave 3/2 and plays with drumming patterns using feet and hands as rhythmic articulators. In moments, dancers are exploring improvisation within tight Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures inspired by Denise Cook’s lush poetry and woven into Bobby Matos rhythmic score.
  • Emily Gastineau updated the Artwork 1. Maiden
Maiden is a modern dance piece set to a folk rock score exploring the idea of adolescent friendships and relationships.  I worked at applying jazz music principles to a non-jazz music score.
