I make pen and ink comics that revolve around topics that I believe are important such as cultural and individual identity, Mexican folklore, the importance of self-affirmation, and of creating your own value. I gained an interest in these topics while researching the ancient history of Mexico. I found the folklore of ancient Aztec gods and goddesses fascinating but the colonization and fall of the Aztec empire made me want to explore my own cultural identity. This research gave my work more meaning and substance and brought more depth to my work.
A current project that involves/illustrates these subjects is a comic about the history and cultural impact of the famous folk saint, Santa Muerte. This folk saint interests me because of its history within the catholic church and how the church paints this saint as a satanic entity, yet, her actual history and influence on Mexican culture is far from that. Instead of telling of her history like a history book converted into comic book form I chose to tell the story through the eyes of the saint of death and herself as the narrator. I made this choice to give it a more personal feel and to also explore the theme of creating your own value.
