Composing music teaches me how to convert my ideas into action. Through music, I want to inspire my collaborators and my audience so they feel empowered to put their ideas into action. This is vitally important today as communities struggle to have its members’ ideas turned into positive action and change.
I have made my living for twenty-five years by performing my own compositions, collaborating with theater artists, dancers, multi-disciplinary artists, and other composers. I am drawn to this type of collaborative work because something special happens when music is combined with physical movement, staged images, and text. My compositions often spark new ideas for my collaborators and together our work evolves into something greater. My compositional workflow is a process that begins with improvisation, making notes, revising my work, notating as needed, and then performing (or recording) my composition. When my compositions are pre-recorded for a theatrical production, I edit the music into sound cues and directly oversee the process of integrating my music into the show.
Recent career highlights include composing and implementing the music and sound design for Live Action Set's immersive production of Crime and Punishment at The Soap Factory. Performing electric lap steel guitar for Paris 1919's production of "Antarctica" at Public Functionary in February of 2014. Creating the Sound design for Frank Theatre's 2013 production of Misterman by Irish Playwright Enda Walsh at The Southern Theater. A 2013 residency at The Saint Paul Music Academy working with over eighty 5th grade music creators using graphic notation as an introduction to the process of composing and performing instrumental music.
