The American Museum of Asmat Art
This small Museum features rotating exhibitions of the art of the Asmat, a semi-nomadic people from the rainforests of Papua, Indonesia. Just 50 years ago the Asmat were a headhunting culture who carved an existence from the jungle with stone-age tools. Stunningly carved shields, "soul ships" and elegant ritual costumes are among the items on display at this intimate museum space. With advance registration, tours are available together with a 30 minute film featuring the Asmat and Colleen Needles, formerly of WCCO TV.
