Stephanie Gustafson is a graduate of St. Cloud State University. She completed her BFA in Studio Art: Integrated Media and her BA in Film Studies. Her work is based in photography, video, and performance where she takes the role of the performer. The work often puts the viewer in an uncomfortable role of voyeur as her characters explore their identity and loneliness within their own world. She currently lives and works in St. Cloud, MN.
Through performance and installation I create scenes and characters that offer a view of the “outsider” finding their identity and a sense of intimacy through unconventional and sometimes perverse means. The “outsider” is a person that does not identify with their surroundings and exists in a world they have created. I have been focusing on the people surrounding me and pulling fragments of their identity into theses exaggerated “outsider” characters that long to feel intimacy with another person. These “outsiders” need to feel a connection to sexuality and to other beings. Though their methods are questionable they are sincere in their actions and allow for a reflective view into a person’s life.
