Behind the Scenes of Sashion Flow at Soo VAC These days Wednesday nights are “Project Runway Night” at my house. A few of my crafty friends come over for an evening of TV watching, art and clothes-making, and good times. We proudly watched our hometown girl Katherine Gerdes create her fashions as we made ours. Two members of “Art Night at Suzy’s,” Marie Gardeski and Liseli Polivka, were asked to participate in this year’s fashion show at Soo VAC. Both are fabulous artists as well as fashion designers that exemplify what I love about Sashion Flow—the best thing about Soo VAC’s annual fashion show is that it’s a place to see art and fashion merge. My mom was a fashion designer before I was born—sewing, knitting, and crocheting were common activities in my home. In fact, I learned to sew before I can remember. One of my earliest projects was sewing bags for my dad's magic trick supplies. (He was an amateur magician and a big hit at birthday parties). Five years ago, when I opened Soo Visual Arts Center I relished the chance to use the space for fashion shows. On September 30th Soo VAC along with Lula Vintage Wear and Moxie Hair Salon present the 2nd Annual Sashion Flow. Ten fashion designers/artists will be featured as well as the fashions of Lula’s, and Andrea Carlson’s paintings will create the backdrop for the show. Using the gallery for a fashion show allows the designers/artists the freedom to show clothing that might not be found on your typical runway. In past fashion shows at Soo VAC, artists such as Matthew Stenerson, have shown their fashion photography in conjunction with the show. My hope for the fashion show is that it is a great evening for people to come together see art and fashion, and that it will give designers and artists the chance to show off there wares in a fun environment. Soo VAC’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone and Sashion Flow brings in a great crowd who might not otherwise come to an art gallery. Everyone can relate to fantastic clothes, and who doesn’t love a great fashion show? —Suzy Greenberg, founder and director of the Soo Visual Arts Center What: Sashion Flow, a Fashion Show Where: Soo Visual Arts Center When: Saturday, September 30 at 7:30 pm Who: Designers include Russell Bourrienne - Marie Gardeski - Labrador - Laura Margaret Lewis - Milkypop - Helen Miller - Liseli Polivka - Molly Roarke - Osla Thomason - Angela Zammarelli
