Collection Overview

Collector's Statement

Pinhole photography is actually lensless photography. A pinhole, replacing a lens, results in a unique soft, beautiful image with a nearly infinite depth of field. The tiny aperture is getting photography back to the basics (camera obscura). The MN photographers listed here, use their own handmade cameras or a store brought camera, and expose 35mm, medium format, large format film or paper negatives and digital images. Scenes exposed using a pinhole camera takes longer seconds, minutes or hours (even days) to achieve.

Because of the lengthy time required to expose scenes, many pinhole photographs include movement of the subjects. People, wind driven leaves, flowers or flags could be shown as ghosts; many times moving water is seen as snow on a lake or river.
