mnartists.org continues our series of collections tied to the Rochester Art Center's Art 101 series. Artists in this collection create work that falls under the category of appropriation art.
Appropriation is defined as the creation of a new work by partially or completely borrowing elements from an existing work. This may include images from photographs, art historical references, advertisements, etc. This session will discuss the use of appropriated images and objects in contemporary art and associated legal and conceptual issues. We will explore how many contemporary artists use appropriation to comment on contemporary culture and our media saturated environment.
Contemporary art 101 is a free contemporary art history seminar held at the Rochester Art Center the first Thursday of each month. Led by Curator of Education Scott Stulen the seminar provides historical context for the artwork of our time. Each session covers important contemporary artists, movements, theories, and trends in a relaxed and open atmosphere. Lecture notes and handouts are provided for each session to encourage group participation and continuity.
