Artwork integrating multimedia, computers, or other communication technology (New Media) increased exponentially over the last decade. New and affordable technologies are opening innovative and creative avenues for creative expression and exploration. The March session of Contemporary Art 101 will discuss the origins of new media art and the exciting ways in which contemporary artists are utilizing technology. Several video, audio, and interactive works by local and international artists will be shown as part of the lecture.

Contemporary art 101 is a free contemporary art history seminar held at the Rochester Art Center the first Thursday of each month. Led by Curator of Education Scott Stulen (an artist of some note himself) the seminar provides historical context for the artwork of our time. Each session covers important contemporary artists, movements, theories, and trends in a relaxed and open atmosphere. Lecture notes and handouts are provided for each session to encourage group participation and continuity.

mnartists.org is collaborating with the RAC by creating on-line collections featuring work on mnartists.org that fits with the theme of each seminar.

From the Walker web archives. Between 1997 and 2003, under the direction of Steve Dietz, Gallery 9 presented more than 100 artists and became one of the most recognized online venues for the exhibition and contextualization of Internet-based art.
