Collection Overview

Curator's Statement

The fleeting art of choreography can only be approximated by conventional still photography. The images in this collection are drawn from mnartists pages and reflect the range of responses to the standard challenge of dance photography, which is typically answered by images of "decisive moments." The camera offers cross sections of dance, portraits of dancers sliced from the flow of designed movement. In the best cases a photograph implies more than a peak moment of accomplishment, or the apex of a leap; the photograph can offer a sense of past and future, of depth, relationship, and place, that allude to the broad field of sensations a choreographic artist incorporates into his or her work.
