RAC Art 101: Landscape in Contemporary Art
Landscape, long considered a primary category in Western Art, continues to be a rich source of inspiration for contemporary artists. Blending reality, fantasy, and the history of landscape art, contemporary artists invent new representations of urban and natural environments. Video to painting, sculpture to installation, the May session of Contemporary Art 101 will discuss artists depicting landscape in unique and sometimes surprising manners.
Contemporary art 101 is a free contemporary art history seminar held at the Rochester Art Center the first Thursday of each month. Led by Curator of Education Scott Stulen (an artist of some note himself) the seminar provides historical context for the artwork of our time. Each session covers important contemporary artists, movements, theories, and trends in a relaxed and open atmosphere. Lecture notes and handouts are provided for each session to encourage group participation and continuity.
mnartists.org is collaborating with the RAC by creating on-line collections featuring work on mnartists.org that fits with the theme of each seminar.
