Celebration of Minnesota Children’s Authors and Illustrators at the Anderson Center
On Saturday, September 9, 2006, from 12:30 to 5PM, the Anderson Center in Red Wing, along with the Red Balloon Book Shop of St. Paul and the Red Wing Public Library, will host the 6th annual Celebration of Minnesota Children’s Authors and Illustrators, the state’s premier event in children’s literature.
Several award-winning children’s authors and illustrators will also make personal appearances, including Erik Brooks, John Coy, Debra Frasier, David Geister, Pete Hautman, Terry Hokenson, Mary Logue, Beckie Prange, Julie Jersild Roth, Joyce Sidman, Lauren Stringer, Catherine Thimmesh, Katherine Tillotson, and Anne Ursu. Debra Frasier will conduct a paper collage/cupcake workshop for both children and families throughout the afternoon in the Café.
The Celebration will offer book sales by the Red Balloon Book Shop, book signings and readings by authors, slide presentations and talks by illustrators, bookmaking workshops for both children and parents, and an extensive gallery display of book illustrations. The Kerlan Collection, one of the finest children’s literature research libraries in the nation, will offer displays of rare manuscripts and illustrations.
Also appearing will be the famous pig “Bud Squealig” of the St. Paul Saints; Dave Olson and his World of Balloons; Kristoffer Olson and his World of Magic; story-telling sessions by Kimberly Faurot who will read A Birthday Cake is No Ordinary Cake by Debra Frasier; the Minnesota Children’s Museum; Literary Activities with the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts; Maud Hart Lovelace, presenters of the Maud Hart Lovelace Award; Art Reach; Banbury Cross Toy Company; The Red Wing Arts Association with the longest painting in Minnesota; and special appearances will be made by “Goldie Gopher” from the University of Minnesota and Ronald McDonald. In addition, there will be a puppet making troupe, a marble-playing workshop, music, face painting, puppet making, displays of local handmade toys, and much more. The staff of Red Dragonfly Press will present demonstrations of printing processes and help interested children print personalized bookmarks.
