Bird x Bird
On October 6, Bird x Bird presents its fifth annual fall exhibition and auction featuring works in all media about, and for, the birds by 100 regionally and nationally known contemporary artists with a reception and silent auction October 6 from 6:00 to 9:00p.m (exhibition preview with beginning bids on Thursday, October 5 from 5:00-9:00p.m.) at the Northrup King Building, Gallery 332, 1500 Jackson St. in N.E. Minneapolis.
Since 2002, Bird x Bird (a nonprofit organization) has enlisted painters, printmakers, photographers, sculptors and multi-media artists to create works of art in response to data collected about avian species. Each year the artworks created are exhibited and auctioned, raising funds to benefit organizations that advocate for the environment. Bird x Bird's mission is to stimulate a creative interface between artists, scientists and the public in an effort to enhance the stewardship of wild species and the environmental education of human beings. The works featured in Bird x Bird 2006 are decidedly contemporary; ranging widely in style, media and content offering diverse interpretations that are lyrical, ironic, humorous or provocative. The birds testify to the current state of affairs - they serve as surrogates for other species, messengers from their creators and resonate with our fundamental connection to nature.
The exhibition includes indigenous species, imaginary species, and deconstructed species and examines our contemporary relationships with the Earth. Bird x Bird 2006 will present over three hundred works of art including art by Doug Argue, Julie Baugnet, Angela Cockayne, Jennifer Davis, Alexa Horochowski, Barbara Kreft, David Lefkowitz, Dean Lucker, Judy Onofrio, Faye Passow, Melba Price, Nancy Randall, Linda Rossi, Jenny Schmid, Chris Sullivan, Bruce Tapola, Xavier Tavera and Katherine Turczan. Bird x Bird lives through the intention and collective action of artists from Minnesota and from other states and countries.
Since its inception Bird x Bird it has grown from 10 to 150 participants, including artists from Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, Illinois, Oregon, Washington, New York, Arizona, Montana, Missouri and the UK. Today Bird x Bird exhibitions are curated by its founder and artistic director, Cynde Randall.
