SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED highlighted episodes for July
This month’s standouts include an entire episode dedicated to mashups and an interview with The Tape-beatles, not to mention a very fresh approach to the art of political cut ups…
I’d get things started with Episode 211, which is a particularly strong showing in general, I think. In particular, pay attention to tracks by Splatt and Splice of Life Faculty - along with mashups by Aggro1 and team9 - but “Mass Distraction” by David Weir is probably the main stand out that week. Weir’s haunting and original approach to the now tried and true art of sampling our nation’s Presidents will really leave you thinking.
Our 2002 interview with The Tape-beatles (Episode 30) is probably one of our strongest interviews to date. Check it out HERE and see what you think. I talked with both Lloyd Dunn and John Heck, the two remaining members of the band at the time, about their history, their film work and their thoughts about sample based music, in general. Six years later, I was surprised to see how well it had stood the test of time. I hope you agree.
Finally, Episode 71 was my very first stab at an all mashup episode. At the time, I had a pretty limited library of tracks by Bastard Pop artists, so it’s interesting to hear what that world sounded like, to me, at the time. It’s still worth a listen, and if you’re a big fan of mashups, check out the mix I put together in 2007 (Find it HERE). It’s just the slightest bit more up to date – enjoy!
