SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED highlighted episodes for August
This month’s highlights include a number of longer form compositions by a painter, an experimental composer and a college professor. Keep your ears peeled for tracks by Natasha Spencer, Carl Stone and Hugo Keesing in episodes 72, 73 and 74...
Episode 72 features an excellent sound collage by visual artist, Natasha Spencer. Her track “The House She Flew In On” is one of the standouts on 1999’s Illegal Art release, “Extracted Celluloid.” All of the artists on the release were asked to create sound collage compositions using nothing but sounds found on film. Spencer chose 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” as her starting point, and an edited version of her track was featured on the Illegal Art release. I played the full version in Episode 72. Be sure to check out our July, 2008 Q&A with the artist HERE.
Episode 73 features "Shibucho,” by Carl Stone. This experimental sound piece, by the San Francisco based composer, might initially seem a bit confusing, but if you give it some time, I’ve personally found that Shibucho eventually unfolds in a very beautiful way. I hope you have the time and the inclination to have this same experience! We featured the SAR Q&A with Carl Stone back in 2007. Check it out HERE.
Episode 74 features the exceedingly long, but very satisfying, Chartsweep composition, by Hugo Keesing. It’s a painstakingly assembled collection of snippets from every #1 single which ever charted from the 1950’s to the 1990’s, and if you’ve got the time to listen to it all the way through, you’ll come away from the experience with a much deeper understanding of American culture. To say the least! Keesing is a teacher and a pop music archivist. Check out our recent Q&A with Hugo Keesing HERE.
