Anthropology in the Arts
Living room at 1064, John Helmer Wulkan
Curator's Statement
The material culture of personal space. The anthropological lens must penetrate through multiple layers of information.
Artist John Helmer Wulkan:
There are many things that make up a person. Sadly, in our society, one of those things is our possesions. This painting will give the viewer a glimpse into the possesions and also the way of thinking my roommates and I live with each day. In a way the viewer will become an anthropologist, studying my living space and makeing deductions from it about my life and personality. Please send me feedback about your thoughts.
Anthropology is a critical examination of the human perspective across time, culture, space, and discipline. Whether consciousness, social behavior, or cognitive organization, among other things, is the object of its study, polymorphic expression and reflection represent a useful tool in the interpretation of mankind.
What the works represented in this collection have in common is a unique window into the world of human experience and a particular self-conscious approach to reflecting upon that experience.
