Leralee Whittle is an international time-based artist working in the media of dance and video installation. She’s developed a body of work on textural threading and dancing with forces. In her creative process she draws from contemporary dance, improvisation, Senegalese dance, phenomena, contemporary philosophy, the “relational” body, experimental media and aesthetic ritual. She is co-director of GLINT artist residency in Big Bend. She collaborates and lives with her musician/composer husband, Paul Sprawl, in Fairmont, MN.
Leralee Whittle / F O R C E S has been presented at Teatro della Limonaia di Sesto Fiorentino, Italy, Aria, in Barcelona, Spain, PWNW, Portland, The Montreal/ Twin Cities Dance Exchange, Minneapolis, La Esquina, Kansas City , in Denver, Colorado, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Leralee Whittle / F O R C E S has been the recipient of grants from Theatre Bay Area, San Francisco, CA, Andy Warhol Visual Arts Foundation, Charlotte Street Foundation and Spencer Museum, Kansas City, MO, Puffin Foundation, New Jersey, Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County and awarded a one year performance residency at Urban Culture Project, Kansas City, MO.
Besides multimedia productions, Whittle has performed numerous on-site dance performances, intimate performances in dance studios, in galleries with visual artists and with musicians at locations such as Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti, Starlight Theater, Terlingua, SuperHappy Fun Land, Houston, Club Congress & Plush, Tucson, Freight and Salvage, Berkeley.
