About TiAnna DeGarmo:
I am a furniture maker based in Minneapolis, MN. I design and build every piece to last a lifetime and beyond.
My journey in wood beagn as a little girl. I vividly remember running and playing on my Father’s jobsites as a small child. The sights, smells, and aridness of it melded into my bones at a very early age. On one seemingly random day, Dad handed me my first tool belt, a circular saw, and a list of parts to cut. After a very quick explanation on how to operate the saw I attempted to make my first cut. Firing up the saw was a terrifying and exhilarating feeling all at once. I was 13 years old, and I was hooked! I was fortunate enough to eventually land an apprenticeship from an amazing craftsman who apprenticed in Germany over 30 years ago. I spent the next 14 years molding and developing my work and my style in furniture design. I established Furniture by Degarmo in 2017.
My furniture and home décor is inspired by a wide range of 20th century furniture maker's and Mother Nature herself. Each piece is dictated by what Nature has provided in the grain and texture of each board. I strive to create furniture designs that are beautiful to behold and pleasurable to handle while being simple, clean, and useful. My deep appreciation for this medium sources my ability to transform raw natural materials into functional and timeless works of art ranging from fine furniture to decorative home furnishings. I am NOT in the business of making disposable furniture.
I believe in the importance of making connections within the community through my work. I source my materials locally through urban logging organizations. When you commission me to design and build a piece of furniture, you are supporting the families of the sawyer and the builder that made it possible.
What makes my work unique is two fold. First, is that each piece is a creative blend of Asian and Scandinavian design highlighting the coloring and grain patterns of every board. Secondly, I am female furniture maker in an industry mostly run by men. I am beginning to stand out with my design and building of unique pieces of furniture. I have recently began creating pieces to be specifically used to teach woodworking to women in the Twin Cities area as a means to empower and build community through woodworking.
