The wood is carved in the style of old ornamental doors, but using the utilitarian tools of our time. Clamped to its back is a screen playing a video and the wood conceals the video work completely an…d only the sound escapes; my own whispers about memories of my war torn home but I am an unreliable narrator; and the audio unfolds fragments of thoughts like a dream or a memory. How can I show you the beauty of a place that no longer exists within or without me? Even my own memory of those moments and spaces has been corroded.
Receiving blanket and child harness are the two first pieces in an ongoing series that was was made as a response to meditation on what it means for my daughter to be a Syrian born during these tumult…uous times, it will be a series of objects revolving around having to explain to her what it meant to be a Syrian, and what happened to Syria and what it means to a Syrian American a conversation that is shaping up to be just as difficult, and just as heart breaking.

In this installation I made three stained glass windows fashioned to resemble traditional arabesque designs. The windows were mounted onto three 32in monitors, and were then built into a window shaped… clearing. The monitors behind the glass continuously played violent unprofessional videos taken by bystanders in Syria.
