I am a furniture designer and interested in kids’ furniture, household and accessory products. I would like to design in a modern and minimalistic style, because I believe less is more and I am impressed by minimalist furniture. Every side of products should be beautiful, including the joint and backside. When you touch, feel and lift the product, every detail should surprise you because of the exquisite quality. The surface, purpose and technology should be considered in one design. Design should serve human beings.
Good design is like telling a story to customers when they interact with the product itself. This connection can bring life to a product, like the IKEA designs.
My first experience with furniture design was exploring IKEA while I was an undergraduate. I was really eager to have my own home and set it up by myself. The most common thing I noticed at IKEA was the expression on people’s faces. They had a strong air of happiness, inspired by the sweet home designs. That is the charm of their attractive furniture. In my design, I want to bring more pleasure and humor to customers.
During undergraduate life, I believed design can change people’s lives and living habits. My work tried to use my ideas to solve typical or tough troubles in society or bring more convenience in daily life and I always made some concept designs. But now, in the U.S., students are asked to realize their ideas. Increasingly, I made prototypes, modeling using the chipboard, wires and glue and also software, for example Rhino. I try to use different materials, like metal, paper, MDF, plastic, and different technology. Gradually, I became more pragmatic and attached to our basic life with designs such as table lamps, coffee tables and trash bins.
I’m prone to design and make more household, furniture and accessories that relates to daily life and bring more fun and beauty and art feeling to my customers. Every products seems like telling a story to my customers and I try to communicate that story to them.
In the next two years, I will learn more about digital technology, such as CNC and laser cutters. The same frame but a different material can evoke different feelings.
