Dominique Winders - Giant's Jewelry

Biography
Giant’s Jewelry are wire sculptures which conceptualize the post-apocalyptic adornment created by tribal societies in a world left in ruins. Larger than life medallions, pendants and headdresses are embellished by religious relics, vines of wire and semi precious stones combined with discarded, found objects in various stages of disintegration and decay. Represented in these pieces is the scope of human existence - suffering, sustenance, struggle, tension, hope, endurance, memory and the tenuous balance between mankind and nature.
Wall hangings, mixed media assemblages and mobiles using gems, chains, rusty bits of discarded hardware, barbed wire and bottle caps are twisted into crowns and charms of a Mad Maxesque society that is both nostalgic and brutal. Each ornament tells a story which is echoed by the shadows they create. Even after The End there will be unpredictable beauty found in imperfection.
Dominique also creates allegorical assemblage paintings which incorporate collage and wire embellishments. Immersed in the emic perspective of a surreal, imaginary culture, the artist explores both dreams and memories to illustrate both the fantastical and mundane.
Her work has been described as whimsical, distorted, delicate and dreamlike with mystical, shamanistic qualities. Each piece takes the perceiver on a journey of both the future and the past.. What would you remember if there was nothing left to remind you?
Giant's Jewelry is a contributing member ofTres Leches Art, a cooperative gallery located in the Northrup King Bldg, NE Arts District of Mpls. Gallery hours: 12-4pm, every Friday, Sat and Sun or by appt.
Artist Statement
Dominique began her fascination with small, shiny objects at the age of 3 when her grandmother introduced her to a tin of broken beaded necklaces. Over the years, she explored her concept of “eye candy” as a jewelry artist establishing Asymmetry Design by Dom., creating one-of-a-kind pieces of beadwork that are each unique, asymmetrical, yet perfectly balanced. Her progression into sculpture and incorporating found objects is a natural step; integrating rusty relics with precious jewels. Each piece contains a story, a root and reason.
Dominique travels frequently to France discovering treasure in flea markets, churchyards, and farmsteads and currently lives in Minneapolis, MN. Her paintings and sculptural objects have been shown in group shows at Altered Esthetics, and she was the featured artist in the Speakeasy at VOICES IX in Dubuque, IA. In 2014 she participated in the Altered Esthetics Solo Artist Exhibition program and joined the co-op gallery, Tres Leches Art in Northrup King Building, Mpls in November 2014.
