  • updated the Artwork A Proper Hidden Frenzy
A social club for German-Americans in the declining city of Troy, New York, prepares to fold from financial pressures. Club members careen from the soothing embrace of nostalgia by night to the messy business of dissolution by day. Theirs is a Germanity frozen in time that is no longer desired by their own children, nor even by the Germans who never left.  Twice a month, abandoned suitcases are auctioned off in the state of Baden-Wuerttemburg. Who buys this luggage - these lost identities - and…
  • updated the Artwork Laughers
I asked 11 strangers to meet me in an outdoor location of personal significance where they would laugh in front of the camera indefinitely. The resultant video portraits last between 30 seconds to 22 minutes. Interested in performance, sincerity and the awareness of a presentation of self, the laugher confronts their work ethic and a continuum from authenticity to simulation. The viewer is then asked to decode this daily symbol, but in this case floating without a provided context, considering n…
  • updated the Artwork Lost Luggage Pos. 278
The following images document the contents of a piece of luggage purchased at a lost luggage auction. For I moment I doubted the entire premise. Is Disney Land real, does magic exist, or is the luggage auction a perfect construction -  a simulacra of the believed real; a parlor game for Euro-heavy middle-management?  A ruse could not be so specific and perfect. Models could never come this close to simulating you. I know you through your choices, your smell, your style. You are a man wi…
  • updated the Artwork Keep Shining: Supporters
For Supporters we invited existing couples (lovers, friends, sisters, mother and daughter) to improvise scenarios of support. Providing them with an initial prompt like “You’ve had a rough day and your partner is attempting to comfort you,” the couples blended memory of real world experience with perceived expectations of acting for the camera - an amorphous blend of sincerity, generic support, and dramatic cliche. Couples enacted each scenario until they felt the situation had been worked…
