This was painted in 1993 based on sleep disorder suffered at the time, which culminated in a broken leg after a fall from a loft in my warehouse space. Images are from dreams/episodes. During REM sleep the body produces dopamine to paralyze the body to prevent one from acting out dreams during this most active dream period. At that time the intensity of dreams was such that this paralysis was overridden. Usually the dreams involved immediate mortal danger, and naturally one attempts to flee danger. On these occasions there would often be some injury. Normally the awareness and inherent knowledge of the space would limit any injury. However after moving from one warehouse space/loft to another was the most dangerous time. At that point one still has the previous space in mind and in a flash went over the edge of the loft causing a broken leg and other less severe injuries. Thus the title "Parasomnia" acrylic on canvas 120x72" to see a higher resolution image go here: http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/vnc333/Early%20Works/Parasomniawhole-2.jpg
The Garden Project includes video, audio, paintings, prints, and sculpture. At a residence in south Minneapolis, The Environmental Protection Agency tested our soil and discovered unacceptable levels of arsenic due to pollution from a 1950s pesticide manufacturer. The soil was removed to a depth of 18 inches, and replaced by clean soil. This project documents the process of removing and replacing the soil. It documents the destroyed ecosystem with plant samples, paintings and prints made from impressions of plants. Several raised rings of stone in the new space are sown with seeds from the destroyed ecosystem. Two apple trees, having survived the soil removal, are the site for bird feeders made of porcelain. The bird feeders hanging from the trees are shaped like a human head and birds eat from the mouth. This concept developed into the human head bird feeder mask, which is worn while birds feed from the mask. During the winter months the garden area was transformed. Each garden ring of stones becomes an igloo. Three igloos are used to record musicians and are infused with collected seeds to become part of the garden in the spring. The Garden Project exhibition includes these artifacts:Plant samples from destroyed ecosystem.Paintings made from plant samplesPrints made from plant sample paintingsVideo documentationPhotographic documentationAudio (improvised music) recorded in the gardenHand built porcelain 'Human Head Bird Feeders''Human Head Bird Feeder MASK' with specially designed and silk-screened apple tree camouflage garments.
Matt and I collaborated musically and artistically for 9 years. In the Winters of 2005/2006 we built five igloos and an ice amphitheatre. Loosely based on traditional Inuit snow structures, we designed the igloos as environments for recording and playing back music. Matt and I had planned to travel to the North Shore of Lake Superior to build our latest version of the Bigloo. After Matt's death, myself and many friends of Matt decided that It would be a fitting way to honor Matt to build the Bigloo. So in Finland, Minnesota on the snow belt of Lake Superiors North Shore we built the largest Bigloo to date. The abundance of snow and amenable temperatures were perfect and we spent ten days in the woods building and experiencing the Bigloo. The Bigloo crew included Samuel Morrison, Heidi Prevenost, Susan Stone, Stacie Engholm, Sarah Heimer, Dan Hill, Luke Aune, Brad Nelson, Ryan Murphy, Trudy Fredericks, David Pitman, Kristen Murray. We ate like Kings and Queens and biglooed like a well oiled machine! From ice to tip this Bigloo measured about 16 feet tall and could accommodate 10 people comfortably.
