Duluth, MN, January through March 2003. Gallery images 18-30 During May of 2002 I was invited to participate in the artist residency program at CENTRUM Center for the Arts and Education at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington. My project was to photograph the fort's coastal defenses, including the concrete mortar and gun emplacement batteries on Artillery Hill as well as the support buildings for the batteries. Located on the Olympic Peninsula at the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the fort, along with two others guarding Admiralty Inlet, was intended to protect the Puget Sound from enemy attack. Although the fort was state of the art when it was built, because of changing technology and the advent of air warfare, almost as soon as the fort was finished (1908), it was rendered obsolete and it never saw action, although it had many incarnations as a military training site, naval base and drug treatment center for youth before becoming a state park and arts center. Because of its obsolescence for coastal defense, however, forts of its kind were systematically shut down leaving Fort Worden as the last one built and one of the best preserved. My primary goal when photographing the fort was to investigate the relationship of the structure to the environment of the coastal peninsula. Although the buildings of the fort have found new use as facilities for the state park, CENTRUM Center for the Arts and hostels and are very well maintained, the defenses themselves are relics, outpaced by the natural world and reflecting a futile attempt to protect a nation from an unseen opponent. It is also a tourist attraction, where visitors can explore its ruins and history. The erection of the fort and its decades of use and subsequent decay have marked the landscape. Concurrently state-of-the-art and obsolete, the fort presents a paradox, seeming to exist outside of history, at once present and ancient.
