The Tragic Hero J. Robert Oppenheimer (Young Oppenheimer)

Water-Soluble Oil on Hardboard* J. Robert Oppenheimer is widely known for his role as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project: the World War II effort to develop the first nuclear weapons at the secret Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.*When Oppenheimer was 14 years old he was locked naked in an outhouse overnight.*For this series of paintings, photographic source material was the inspiration but the artist adjusted the brow and facial muscles, and added "moisture" to the eyes to give the paintings a "tragic weight" not found in the photographs. It is also important to note the importance in this work of historical relativity and the continued relevance of painting as a means of communicating a non-photographic, artistic truth.
