Midas Rat - a graphic novella

- A graphic treatment of a short story written by my son James at age 20. The illustration I am doing by collaging in Photoshop images found doing Google searches on the internet. Each panel may include elements appropriated from a dozen or more photos, layered with filter effects and sometimes even a wee bit of drawing! The illustrated story, almost done, will be about 30 pages when complete.

This painting exemplifies the results of the initial work with my wet-into-wet oil technique, before other layers of paint are added. Here I chose not to paint further. It is descriptive of microbial life, upon which all higher forms depend.

Blue Fugue

A spoonful of fertile organic soil or mid-summer pondwater holds more than a billion microorganisms plus numerous other tiny creatures - of perhaps a million different species. Most of these are uncatalogued and unstudied by science - and vary incredibly from one spot on earth to another. All larger species depend on these for daily function, in ways we only dimly understand. Our biological ignorance is profound!

This mural was created in the small village of Santiago Tejupan in Oaxaca, Mexico during February 2007. I designed it for the newly organized Casa de Cultura, at the invitation of the Director, Patricia Mendoza. We had the help and participation of about 25 adults and children for the 2 week project, and generous support from the municipal president to help buy materials. A short VIDEO (listed under RELATED MEDIA) documents the process. This is one of many community mural projects I have been involved in over the last 25 years.
