The Sami folk are indigenous to the far northern regions of Scandinavia (land commonly called Lappland.) My Sami art "decorated" ornaments have bands around them following the traditional weaving belt/band patterns common on the equipment and clothing of the Sami people, and "character" symbols representing the mythology and creatures of the Sami. Some have "Buorrit Juovllat" (Merry Christmas) written on them, while others have"Memories of the Sami folk" written on them in the Northern Sami language.
This scoop harkens back to the 17-18th century Dalarna region of Sweden, when itinerent disabled folk artists traveled from one farmstead to another, hiring out their skills to decorate the walls, furniture and personal items of the Dalarna folk. The Dalarna region of Sweden (north and west of Stockholm) is still the center of Swedish folk arts today.
