There is such a place here on earth, where the fall's dusk opens a journey into a world of enthralled manifestation. A place called Lhasa, situated in the Himalayas and on the top of the world-Tibet. Ever since I can remember, this place has fascinated and thrilled me through many renditions of old folk story. Stories that encouraged me to find more about this place and find almost the core of origin. This fascination let to these findings of amazing structures build by great emperors and kings of the past. One of those structures is the Potala Palace. A holy structure, first built as a palace by a great king named Songsten Gampo and it stood on Marpo Ri hill above the valley of Lhasa. Pilgrims from all over Tibet journey towards this holy ground every year, through treacherous valleys and uncertain climates. To seek this palace is to seek true sense of peace with the high lamas for these pilgrims. Lamas are disciples of the great Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), and the Potala houses many stupas and monasteries of Lord Buddha, which served the lamas as a place of worship. The palace was first built for Princess Wencheng by King Songtsen Gampo in 637. Later, in the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama, the palace was integrated into the details of the greater structure now known today. The construction of the greater structure began in 1645 starting with Potrang Marpo (Red Palace) which took over 7000 workforce and 1500 craftsman. In 1648, the Portrang Karpo (White Palace) was completed, and served as a winter palace for the Dalai Lama up until the Cultural Revolution in the 1950s. The Cultural Revolution would prove to be a critical time to the integrity of its structure and the ingenuity of its design. The palace suffered some exterior structural damages but the damages done inside were historically devastating to the Tibetans. Old relics, scriptures, and irreplaceable objects were burned and the statues made of gold and gems were stolen by the People's Liberation Army. The monks who housed these palaces were captured and were later killed. China denies any wrong doing and claims to have redirected the "religious minded" inhabitants towards modernization while having made the Tibetans an outcast populace. The palace now housed as an tourist destination and mainly occupied as a gift shop. A tourist destination design to cash in from the booming tourism sales for the Chinese government and all the tourist gets in return is the hollow palace which was once filled with chants of the monks and faces of pilgrims from all over Tibet in great spirit for their spiritual homage to the lamas. Waging at the alliance of Chinese Red Army with nothing but peace, the palace still stands tall on top of the hill overlooking Lhasa city being modernized. Once a desolate ground for many; inhabitants of Tibet formed an establishment where peace reigns. The fate seems, so far, that the powerful nation of China, ruled under communist regime can never accommodate our uniqueness. I am though hopeful that the Tibetan people will always practice peace, for they have been bestowed upon by the hopes of greater mankind. My part as an artist and a Tibetan, at first, is to capture the ruins of monasteries, landmarks, and to truly represent our heritage and to tell our story to the world.
