Serpentine Chair

After being somewhat dissatisfied with the results of my previous two attempts at a chair, it took me a while to attempt it again - sixteen years, to be exact. The result is this, built in cherry, ebony, stainless steel, nickel-plated aluminum, and nylon monofilament line. The weaving of the nylon and stainless was especially challenging, taking some 40 hours to complete. The finish uses a gel stain with a lacquer top coat.

Ellipsoid Table

This table was designed and executed as a more-or-less formal exercise in translating a traditional furniture form into a more contemporary expression through the intersections of regular geometries. Dimensions: 30"H x 36"W x 44"L Materials: Bubinga pommel veneer, walnut, maple, birdseye maple, ebony, brass, red oak. Finish: Behlen's Tabletop Varnish, black acrylic laquer, nitrocellulose laquer, wipe-on polyurethane, gel stain.

Coreolis

10" dia. x 4" high Ancient kauri, ebony, maple, nickel-plated brass. The inspiration for this vessel was watching water run down a sink. The coreolis effect (a very small force caused by the earth's rotation) does not actually determine the direction water spins as it drains. This piece won Best Turning at the 2005 Northern Woods Exhibition and was shown at the Contemporary American Woodturning exhibition at the Rochester Art Center, Rochester, MN.

This drawing has been displayed as part of the grand opening show at The Loft gallery in St. Cloud, MN. I originally designed and built the frame for the drawing "Kristy" but switched it for the show.

Sally's Wine Rack

18"w x 8"h x 12"d Cherry, Honduran mahogany, nickel-plated aluminum, stainless steel hardware. Water-based poly finish. This piece was done as a commission for someone who had a love for wine and wanted a way to display her most prized bottles. She wanted it to be a "piece of sculpture". This piece won "Best Design" at the 2004 Northern Woods Exhibition.

Liquor Cabinet 60"h x 30"w x 30"d The unusual title of this piece refers to the reactions I was trying to elicit from the viewer during their experience with it. I also wanted to create a piece that was unlike much design today, with characteristics that speak less to the means of manufacture and more to an elegant presence. It is built of maple, ebony, industrial rubber, aluminum, and tiger maple veneer with brass hardware and turnings. The finish uses water-based analine dyes with a clear lacquer topcoat and black lacquer. It won both the Blue Ribbon for Large Furniture Piece and the Sweepstakes Prize (which encompasses all woodworking projects) at the 2003 Minnesota State Fair.

"Wendy" is the drawing I displayed at the Wilcock Gallery Figure Show in 2002, the 2002 NEMAA Fall Fine Arts Show (Awarded Best Multimedia) and was one of three entered in the Minnetonka Arts Center Figure Show in 2003. Drawn at the Drawing Workshop using hard pastels on Strathmore 500 vellum-surface bristol. Frame was created for this piece in curly maple with ebony and ivoroid inlays.
