MINNEAPOLIS - "...so good she's scary" ([i]The Pulse[/i]), FUEGO Flamenco director and accomplished choreographer/dancer Colette Illarde brings to the stage an alluring program blending traditional and contemporary flamenco. With guest artists from Spain and New Mexico alongside local luminaries, [i]Flamenco, Heart and Soul[/i] features dramatic movement, percussive precision and passionate live music. Performing with her company-noted for its exciting sound and outstanding choreography-Illarde debuts FUEGO Flamenco at Southern May 7-10, 2009. [i]Flamenco, Heart and Soul[/i] showcases new choreography by Illarde, traditional flamenco standards, and Illarde's encore performance of [i]Volar[/i], commissioned from Manuel Reyes especially for her McKnight Fellowship [i]Solo[/i] spotlight. "The program is a cathartic exploration that guides the audience toward the mystical experience called [i]duende[/i], or connection to the spirit," explains Illarde. "[i]Duende[/i] is palpable to everyone present. It is the goal of every flamenco event, and it is flamenco's heart and soul." FUEGO Flamenco's goal is to make flamenco accessible and genuine to the community. In traditional Spanish style, there will be a [i]juerga[/i] (flamenco hootenanny) after the concert on May 9. Join the company for an up-close and personal experience: ask questions, clap and sing along, enjoy wine and Spanish tapas, and take a mini dance class. Meet the artists and other aficionados (flamenco fans) and become part of the spirit.

March 30, 31 2007 at the Southern Theater The Minneapolis Guitar Quartet also offers an exciting, virtuosic collaboration with flamenco dancer Colette Illarde. These productions feature Spanish composers Enrique Granados and Joaquin Rodrigo with music arranged by the MGQ and choreography by Ms. Illarde, highlighting both Spanish classical and Flamenco dance styles.

FUEGO Flamenco and guest artists presents three different shows at the 2000 Fringe Festival. Flamenco Impressionista explores the mystery, the shifting colors and fleeting shadings felt in flamenco. Traditional flamenco music, music by Debussy and DeFalla, and a concert flutist make the evening an impressionistic dream. Flamenco Expresionista shares the fiery cuadro flamenco style. Local flamenco dancers and a singer are guest artists. Flamenco expression at its' best. Flamenco Abstracto deconstructs the components of the art and reunites them anew. With original music, lots of improvisation and a jazz saxaphone.

FUEGO is the inspired flamenco duo of dancer Colette Illarde and guitarist S. Mateo Davies, who in recent years, have sparked a growing interest in this art form by their performances at numerous venues around town. FUEGO’s new heartfelt work Corazon Flamenco opens Saturday, August 4th and promises to be their hottest performance to date! Spain provides the best learning environment for the serious flamenco artist. Thanks to a generous grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, FUEGO Flamenco traveled once again to Spain earlier this year to study with many of the world’s most renowned flamenco artists. While abroad, Corazon Flamenco was conceived and this new work reflects the inspiration and spirit entrenched in flamenco’s birthplace.

SIMPLY...FLAMENCO! A rare look into the world of flamenco dance, music and song This visually stunning artistic statement takes place at Hamline University's Anne Simley Theater, 1536 Hewitt Avenue in St. Paul. Presented by FUEGO Flamenco, the concerts are sponsored by the Department of Graduate Liberal Studies with support by Hamline's Spanish Department. Special guests Cristian Almodovar (from Malaga, Spain), Paco Fonta (from Jaen, Spain), Celia Clara (from Miami), and Maria Cecilia (from Chicago) join local artists Maria Elena “La Cordobesa”, John Devine, Trevor May, Colette Marie Illarde “La Canela” and Scott Mateo Davies in performance of new and traditional flamenco works. A unique donation strategy, called FUEGO Friends, ensures that at least 50 seats per concert will be given to diverse community organizations. This is a step toward achieving FUEGO's mission of making a theatrical concert event accessible to persons often marginalized from such an opportunity. What makes "Simply…Flamenco!" distinctive is the intention to directly communicate flamenco's emotional content without superimposing a storyline or plot. The audience is invited to experience the rich gamut of emotions that is flamenco.
