The UU's light the chalice at the beginning of the service as a symbol that the sanctuary is a safe and sacred place. I researched the history of the chalice - a symbol which originated in World Was II when people would put a chalice in the window of their residence to indicated safe harbor. I asked several members of the church to let me take plaster molds of their forearms and hands and used these symbolically to hold up the chalice. The hands include four different aged hands of mixed genders to represent the responsibility of the whole congregation in maintaining the church.
