Low Hangs the Moon

Low Hangs the Moon is for Soprano, Piano, and Computer Generated CD. This recording is of the premier, recorded 02 April 2001, St. Cloud, MN USA. Hillary Vermillion, soprano; Thomas Allen, piano. Low Hangs the Moon is a setting of a portion of text from Walt Whitman's Sea-drift: Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking. In this poem, Whitman transcribes the song of a solitary bird nesting by the sea whose mate did not return to the nest one day, apparently having met with tragedy. Pianist and SCSU professor Thomas Allen commissioned Low Hangs the Moon, with support from the St. Cloud State University Foundation. It is dedicated to the memory of Ruth Gant. The text set follows: O madly the sea pushes upon the land,?With love, with loveLow hangs the moon, it rose late,?It is lagging O I think it is heavy with love, with love.Soothe! soothe! soothe!?Close on its wave soothes the wave behind,?And again another behind embracing and lapping, every one close,?But my love soothes not me, not me.O rising stars!?Perhaps the one I want so much will rise, will rise with some of you.Low-hanging moon!?What is that dusky spot in your brown yellow??O it is the shape, the shape of my mate!?O moon do not keep her from me any longer.O madly the sea pushes upon the land,?With love, with love.

audio: Low Hangs the Moon
Autumn Etude

Autumn Etude is a study for a larger project, Eyes and Ears, an installation/interactive CD-ROM created in collaboration with visual artist William Gorcica. The focus of both Autumn Etude and Eyes and Ears is how one defines a space physically and electronically. The installation/interactive CD-ROM also examines the possibilities of audience interactivity in the creation of a sound piece (as opposed to performer interactivity). In these works, space is sonically defined by the intersection, overlapping and juxtaposition of streams of sound from different environments. These streams are generated from each environment by the computer manipulation of a sample or samples recorded from each identified environment.

audio: Autumn Etude
Fun House

Fun House, composed for and in collaboration with Bass Clarinetist Pat O'Keefe, is for Bass Clarinet and real-time interactive electronics (Kyma/Capybara). Fun House is designed around an evolving series of live processing patches (Rooms) that produce sound objects which are structurally coupled to the sonic environment; changes in the sonic environment as measured by Kyma produce data that manipulates the timbral and spatial properties of the sound objects. The sound objects are treated as analogous to multi-dimensional objects in a sculptural mobile and are programmed to seek a balance within the sonic environment created by the performance space, their own sound, that of the Bass Clarinetist and the audience. As the performer navigates the space(s) of Fun House by contributing to the sonic environment and by physically moving within it, he constructs the structure of the work in collaboration with the environment itself. This is a recording of a performance at ACF's June 2006 Sound Check concert at the Southern Theater, Mpls., MN, featuring bass clarinetist Pat O'Keefe.

audio: Fun House
