And so it was with "Pushing Empties." I was hiking around the banks of the Mississippi River looking for a way to best compose a painting of a railroad swing bridge just up river from downtown Saint Paul. It rained the night before, leaving the morning air bright and clean, but leaving the river bank muddy. After a half mile of hopping along rocks and walking across logs, I had managed to stay out of the muck. But before me was a good 10 yard stretch of very wet mud. I ran as fast and light as I could across the pudding. Once clear, I made my way around a bend and up a bank of more solid earth to where I found my view. Normally I begin with the thing that will change first and so I was prepared when the Swing Bridge did what it does. It swung open to allow the river traffic to pass. I painted my way around the inconvenience until it seemed it may stay open indefinitely. Then the sky changed and light with it, so I took out a second panel and started to paint an open swing bridge. Curious to see if anything interesting was coming I turned my gaze up river and I saw nothing, but back toward downtown I saw what felt like few football fields of steel slowly rolling up the river. Smiling at my luck and feeling better about this new composition I continued to work waiting for the tug to push its nine empty barges into position. I left with a very different painting and a very different day than when I started.
