Demonstrating the artistic range of the creative partnership of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi, the show centers on a new body of paintings, graphic textile pieces, and sound installation that examine the nature of images, image reproduction, and the object through playful juxtaposition and use of the gallery space. Taking the show title to heart, a large site-specific piece, simply titled Image as Object, Object as Image, will be created in the gallery itself, taking full advantage of MCAD’s architecture. In addition to the new work, the exhibition will also feature an overview of previously completed projects, including commissioned posters, broadsides, and self-initiated and commissioned publications. Image as Object, Object as Image: Graphic Abstraction by Sonnenzimmer aims to shed light on the exploratory nature of their contemporary graphic practice, one that doesn’t make a distinction between fine and applied art.About SonnenzimmerSonnenzimmer is the Chicago-based art, design, and print studio of Nick Butcher and Nadine Nakanishi. Merging backgrounds in typography, fine art, printmaking, and publication design, the couple’s commissioned and self-initiated work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a recent exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Known primarily for their idiosyncratic take on printed matter, especially the screen printed poster, Sonnenzimmer has carved out a niche for their small commercial art studio, servicing an array of clients as varied as the Poetry Foundation, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sub Pop records, and numerous free jazz groups. Their work has been published by Gestalen, Rockport Publishers, and Princeton Architectural Press and is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Design and Architecture collection and the Museum of Design Zürich’s poster collection. Founded in 2006, Sonnenzimmer sees a bright future for the graphic arts as a new generation of image-makers emerges.Gallery Hours:Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact MCAD Gallery at 612.874.3667 or gallery@mcad.edu.

image: Art print series for Ghostly International, Laub, Screen print, 2011

image: Art print series for Ghostly International, Schall, Screen print, 2011

image: Insound 10 for 10 Poster Series 10 posters @ 18" x 24" Screen print, 2010

image: Textile Field and Textile Sun, Quilst, 2012
They are to Susannah Bielak, Amanda Hankerson, Michael Hoyt, Melissa Loop, and Lauren Roche, all of the Twin Cities. In addition to receiving $10,000 stipends, over the course of the year these artists have the opportunity to meet with three arts professionals, exhibit recent work in a culminating group show at MCAD Gallery, and have a local art curator or critic write an essay about their work in a catalog that accompanies the exhibition.Since 1981 the Jerome Foundation has generously funded these fellowships for emerging artists, which are designed to identify and support outstanding artists in the state of Minnesota at the early stages of their professional careers. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is proud to be the administrator of this fellowship program that has benefitted more than 155 artists over the past 30 years. These newest Jerome fellows were selected out of a field of 245 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals. This year’s jurors were Miranda Lash, curator of modern and contemporary art at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Shirley Tse, artist and professor at California Institute of Arts, and Jill Ewald, curator and director of the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College.

image: Susannah Bielak, Still life #4: A smell of dust invades the room, 2009

image: Amanda Hankerson, Heidi Hankerson, Waukegan, IL, 2012

image: Amanda Hankerson, Malcolm Hankerson, Brooklyn, NY, 2012

image: Michael Hoyt, PohoPosit, 2012

image: Michael Hoyt, Rolling Revelry Sooline Serenade, 2012

image: Melissa Loop, Don't Mind the Smoke, 2012

image: Melissa Loop, A Dream of a Made-up Hawaiian Island, 2012

image: Lauren Roche, Seated Woman with Dog, 2012

image: Lauren Roche, Woman Holding Cat, 2012
The fellowships are funded by a generous grant from the McKnight Foundation and administered by the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.About the 2012/13 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Visual Artists recipients:Jim Denomie is an imaginative storyteller who uses wit and humor in his paintings to comment on social, cultural, and political issues as he perceives them. Denomie graduated from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities with a BFA in 1995. Since then he has had more than ten solo shows at local and regional venues that include the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota; Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa; and Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan. He has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, such as a Native American Fine Art Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship, a Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Collaboration Grant, and a Jerome Study and Travel Grant. Chris Larson is a multimedia artist whose work is rooted in sculpture. Using film, video, photography, performance, drawing, and painting, he animates object-filled architectural spaces that are always flawed or radically challenged. Larson received a BFA from Bethel College in 1990 and an MFA from Yale University in 1992. In addition to exhibiting throughout the United States, Larson has participated in group exhibitions in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay, and he has had solo exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany. Larson has also received fellowships from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the McKnight, Jerome, and Bush foundations. He is currently an associate professor of art at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.Ruben Nusz creates artificial limitations to foster potentially new and surprising outcomes. His most recent work involves creating trompe l’oeil frames that are visually called into question by subsequent paint applications that disrupt human perception. Since receiving his BFA Summa Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota in 2001, Nusz has been featured in solo shows at St. Cloud State University, Thomas Barry Fine Arts, Art of This Gallery, and the Rochester Art Center. In addition, he has participated in group exhibitions at the Walker Art Center, The Soap Factory and the Minnesota Museum of American Art among others. In addition to being an arts writer for mnartists.org, Nusz is the co-founder and editor of Location Books, an artist-run independent publisher with works in the permanent collections of institutions across the U.S. Natasha Pestich is a printmaker who cultivates both a studio and public practice that uses design and collective storytelling to influence how visitors engage with a given site. Pestich received a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal in 1998 and an MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2000. She has exhibited widely, from a recent Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts to national shows from coast to coast, and even internationally. Since 2011, she has been partnering with Pillsbury House + Theatre, leading a design process to engage community members with MCAD students and faculty to redesign the Pillsbury House lobby to reflect its new focus as a “Cultural Community Hub.” She has participated in several artist residency programs in Minneapolis, Seattle, and Chicago, and she has received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant. She is an associate professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. This year’s McKnight Visual Artist Fellows were chosen from a field of 209 applicants. The selections were made by a panel of three arts professionals: Terry Adkins, an interdisciplinary artist and professor of fine arts at the University of Pennsylvania; Craig Anderson, an independent art curator who most recently served as the executive director of the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Hunter Drohojowska-Philp, an art historian, journalist, and art critic from the Los Angeles area.EXHIBITION FOR 2011/12 RECIPIENTSThe MCAD Gallery will be featuring an exhibition of new work by the 2011/12 McKnight Visual Artist Fellows—Christine Baeumler, Liz Miller, Elizabeth Simonson, and Marcus Young—from July 13 to August 17, 2012. The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The artists will discuss their work and the fellowship year on Saturday, July 14, at 4:00 p.m., and Diane Mullin, curator at the Weisman Art Museum, will serve as moderator. The four McKnight fellows will discuss their work on Saturday, July 14, at 4:00 p.m., with moderator Diane Mullin, curator at the Weisman Art Museum. The exhibition will be on view through Friday, August 17, in the MCAD Gallery.ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND EXHIBITIONChristine Baeumler, a public environmental artist, explores the power of art to increase awareness of environmental issues and to facilitate action. By portraying places remote from our daily experiences, yet impacted ecologically by our actions, the work offers a glimpse into these compelling, fragile, and often invisible worlds. Her most recent project, Reconstituting the Landscape: A Tamarack Rooftop Restoration, has been a twelve-month collaboration with Kurt Leuthold, vice-president and principal, and Fred Rozumalski, ecologist, both of Barr Engineering. They have created a bog ecosystem above the entryway to MCAD that both calls attention to these unique ecosystems and presents an artistic re-imagining of green-roof infrastructure. The project is also meant to remind residents of how we might “reconstitute” the landscape by capturing water where it drops.Liz Miller’s large-scale mixed-media installations are reaching new heights in her new work, Imperious Decorum. She will be creating a dramatic sculptural installation that occupies twenty-six vertical feet, allowing viewers to interact with the work from various vantage points of the multilevel gallery. Miller’s work references a diverse array of visual imagery, ranging from costumes, pageantry, patterns, and ornaments to weapons and military uniforms. Forging relationships between these benign and malignant forms confuses the original implications of each. In this manner, Miller highlights the precariousness of perception while creating a fascinating hybrid sculptural reality.Elizabeth Simonson pushes the beauty of repetition and imperfection to material limits in her site-specific installations. She will engage the spacious, four-story light well in the MCAD Gallery by filling it with numerous pod-like units of wire and beads whose shapes and patterns are based on forms in sacred geometry. Acting like cells, they will be attached and suspended throughout the space to create an extremely complex yet symmetrical three-dimensional matrix. Within that matrix, another pattern of beads will follow an asymmetrical path, underscoring the flaws and randomness inherent in systems of all types. Marcus Young, whose practice of behavioral art integrates personal and collective experience played out in social spaces, will be presenting I’m looking for love, so let’s fix the system. The work expresses his simple hope of improving his life through finding love and de-cluttering his home. He is parting with furniture and furnishings he has grown attached to but no longer needs. Through advertisements on Craigslist, he will invite interested buyers to view and purchase his belongings in the gallery, a hybrid marketplace. Young will also post excerpts of his personal ads on the gallery walls next to his Craigslist ads, in the hopes of finding Mr. Right. With this exhibition, he wonders about love and attachment to objects, loneliness and home design, pricing and letting go, and the function of the gallery in contemporary art practice. He will be available in the gallery once a week and by special appointment to meet anyone interested in the project. The fellowship year began in May of 2011 when a panel of national arts professionals selected these mid-career Minnesota artists as McKnight fellows out of 224 applicants. The jurors were Tumelo Mosaka, curator of contemporary art at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Colleen Sheehy, director of the Plains Art Museum in Fargo, North Dakota; and Kay WalkingStick, a New York City–based artist and professor emeritus at Cornell University. Over the past year, the fellows have had the opportunity to participate in one-on-one professional development meetings and to meet with three visiting critics: Mary Jane Jacob, professor of sculpture and executive director of exhibitions at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Cathy Lebowitz, arts writer and senior editor at Art in America; and Tom Finkelpearl, executive director of the Queens Museum of Art.ABOUT THE McKNIGHT ARTIST FELLOWSHIPSThe McKnight Artist Fellowship program is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the country.
2011/12 MCAD-Jerome Fellows - Announced!

2011/12 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists Minneapolis-The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, in conjunction with the Jerome Foundation, is pleased to announce the five recipients of the 2011/12 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowships for Emerging Artists. They are Richard Barlow, Lauren Herzak-Bauman, Alison Hiltner, and Jehra Patrick, of the Twin Cities, and Gregory Euclide, of Le Sueur, MN. In addition to receiving $10,000 stipends, over the course of the year these artists have the opportunity to meet with three arts professionals, enroll in one professional-development course, and have their work included in a culminating group exhibition that is accompanied by a catalog. Since 1981, the Jerome Foundation has generously funded these fellowships for emerging artists, which are designed to identify and support outstanding artists in the state of Minnesota at the early stages of their professional careers. The Minneapolis College of Art and Design is proud to be the administrator of this fellowship program that has benefitted more than 150 artists over the past 30 years. These newest Jerome fellows were selected out of a field of 236 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals. This year's jurors were Bruce Charlesworth, assistant professor of film, video, and new genres at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and one of the first five Jerome Fellowship recipients in 1981; Miki Garcia, executive director of Contemporary Arts Forum Santa Barbara; and Cherise Smith, associate professor of art history and African and African diaspora studies at the University of Texas, Austin. Richard Barlow interrogates the "natural" in representations of the natural world. By appropriating existing landscape images-from 19th century photographs, album covers, and SUV advertisements-Barlow creates seductively beautiful paintings, drawings, and prints that call into question their own historical and cultural meanings. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Barlow received his MFA in painting from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in 2005. Among his many accomplishments, he has recently been awarded two Graffiti Prevention Mural grants through Clean City Minneapolis. Gregory Euclide shares Barlow's fascination with our highly mediated experience of nature. Euclide's mixed-media sculptures and installations begin as traditional landscape paintings-watercolor on paper-but quickly become multi-dimensional topographies, where pools of raw paint mimic the properties of rivers and lakes, and remnants of the landscape-from cigarette buts and plastic shards to pine needles and bark-tenuously coexist. An art instructor at Prior Lake High School and two-time recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, Euclide earned his BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, and his MFA in 2008 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Lauren Herzak-Bauman draws upon properties unique to porcelain to make objects and temporal installations that explore mourning and loss. Her layered masses of broken and cracked handmade porcelain turn fragility and translucency into metaphors for the human condition. Herzak-Bauman received her BFA from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and her MFA in 2009 from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She currently teaches in the department of art at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. Alison Hiltner marvels at the worlds that science seeks to explain. Using ordinary materials, she creates singular objects as well as complex environments that comically mimic many of life's most amazing features, from the cellular to the celestial. Hiltner received her BFA from the University of Kansas and her MFA in 2002 from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her work has been supported by several unique grants, a Puffin Foundation Artist Grant, and a Sculpture Space Residency in Utica, New York. Jehra Patrick explores the contexts in which "art" is made "Art"-as an object worthy of collection and incorporation into prominent museum exhibitions-and reinterprets their archival record in large-scale paintings and photo-based works. By focusing on the behind-the-scenes installations and mundane details of art's promotion, Patrick questions conditions that bring certain artists, movements, and exhibitions into prominence. Patrick has a BFA from the College of Visual Arts, and she is currently the project coordinator for mnartists.org and the program assistant for the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers. ABOUT THE JEROME FOUNDATIONThe Jerome Foundation, created by artist and philanthropist Jerome Hill (1905-1972), seeks to contribute to a dynamic and evolving culture by supporting the creation, development, and production of new works by emerging artists.
2010/11 MCAD-Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists Exhibition

Minneapolis-The Minneapolis College of Art and Design, along with the Jerome Foundation, is proud to present an exhibition featuring new work by the 2010/11 MCAD-Jerome Fellowship recipients: Greg Carideo, Teri Fullerton, Julia Kouneski, Brett Smith, and Jonathan Bruce Williams. The exhibition opens on Friday, September 30, with a reception on Friday, October 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. A catalog with essays by Jonathan Thomas, Twin Cities-based art critic and curator, accompany the exhibition. Thomas will also moderate an artist panel on Wednesday, October 12, at 6:30 p.m. Greg Carideo's most recent photography series, slideshows, and videos playfully explore the tenuous distinctions between the real and the artificial. By constructing quixotic relationships between objects and their beholder-there are no fixed perspectives and content itself seems to be absent-the artist makes the act of perception into a game that has larger implications for understanding how we come to know the world around us. Teri Fullerton puts basic human desires-a longing for intimacy and a sense of place-at the center of her photographic and video work. Her re-presentations of the images and texts generated by her personal online matchmaking experiences expose a vulnerability that is juxtaposed with a simultaneous engagement with her family, close friends, and childhood home in the Pacific Northwest. Julia Kouneski's performative work negotiates the boundaries of the self in relation to other objects, both animate and inanimate. The artist's newest videos continue to push the limits of what is comfortable for herself and for the viewer. By relinquishing her physical control of a situation, Kouneski asks us to consider the somatic affects of outside forces (bodies or environments) acting upon us. Brett Smith engages with theatrical modes of science fiction (as books and films) in ways that delight as well as disturb. His latest installations are hybrid spaces. Part movie set, part carnival fun house, they feel like simulations of themselves due to their scale and strange familiarity. Jonathan Bruce Williams revives seemingly moribund photographic and film technologies to create new tools for making images. His research-heavy practice results in unique experiments with cameras, lenses, projectors, and light where most latent images reference the means of their production over their illusionism. These Jerome Fellows were selected out of a field of 322 applicants by a panel of three arts professionals. This year's jurors were Jane Blocker, associate professor of contemporary art in the department of art history at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Oliver Herring, a Brooklyn-based multi-media artist, and Adam Lerner, executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. ABOUT THE JEROME FOUNDATION The Jerome Foundation dedicates all of its funding to further the careers of emerging artists. They support organizations and individual artists living in the state of Minnesota and the five boroughs of New York City. Since 1981 the Jerome Foundation has generously funded these fellowships for emerging artists, which are designed to identify and support outstanding artists in the state of Minnesota at the early stages of their professional careers. Over the past 30 years over 150 artists have benefitted from this fellowship program. ABOUT THE MINNEAPOLIS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN Recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to visual arts education, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design is home to nearly 800 students pursuing Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science and Master of Fine Arts degrees.
