I'd like to be able to make the historically significant Dakota Conflict in New Ulm become personally, emotionally significant to a someone who would visit this monument. My goal is to include figures representing different aspects of the conflict and cause a viewer to sympathize with their situation. Its never as simple as good guys, bad guys.
The park is located in "Goosetown." Goosetown is the area of the original New Ulm settlement. Residents of the area had Geese for eggs, meat, and down. Gertie the Goose is a character in a local folk tale including tiny gnomes who came to New Ulm by stowing away with a Bohemian immigrant boy. Gertie is saved by choking on a giant acorn by the father of the gnome family, Hans Heintzelmenschen. They are forever friendsThe sculpture was made with plaster over a plywood and foam armature. A rubber mold was made and sparkling white cement cast at American Artstone Company in New Ulm,MN. The goose is twice life size. It was dedicated spring of 2006.
His art tells us he was very talented. His autobiography tells us about his adventures. He manned the cannons defending Rome, dueled in the streets, and was generally a self-described super hero. A sculpting, swashbuckling, egomaniac...where's Hollywood?
